I saw a picture the other day of a guy swaping a stall converter and the trans was still in the car. Is this possible, can you swap a stall without removing the trans.

It is easily(?) done. You can unbolt the transmission, and slide it back just far enough to eak the convertor out. It is not really that bad of a job to do. You just need to make sure the new convertor is full of fluid and it goes on all the way.

Also helps to put long bolts on each side of the trans so you can slide it back change the convertor and push it back against the motor and it will line up.

Thanks for the tip CA420!
I'm about to pull my converter and that is a great idea.

It really helps, used to change flexplates on motorhomes and doing this saved my rump many times. Just take your time and strap the tranny to your jack and it should go smooth.

Just to add my .02 on CA420's suggestion (a great one by the way), don't forget to use grade 8 bolts for the long bolt procedure.

You can use standard bolts. This should not be done without using a jack, do not use the long bolts to support the trans. I have done this on everything from C4's to T400's to Allison transmissions. All you're doing is keeping alignment.

Something else that is helpful is cutting the heads off the bolts for when installing a tranny, just screw them into the block and jack the tranny up and push it onto the studs and you're home free.

Hey, CA420, you stole my tip. The stud idea works great. They end up working like the dowel pins, only back further.
