: Cowl Hood
Camaro Mark Dec 24th, 09, 07:28 AM Alright everyone I can get a great deal on a 4" steel Cowl hood. Not sure though if I want a 2" cowl or leave it alone. Opinions please. This is my car as it sits now:

Dougs72Nova Dec 24th, 09, 07:34 AM Keep the SS hood! Your car looks perfect as it sits!
SPARKY69 Dec 24th, 09, 07:37 AM It does look good but its hot rodded up a bit already.so i vote for a stock cowl hood or the 2 inch hood ...4 is overkill, it would look silly!!..imo
prostreet69camaro Dec 24th, 09, 07:37 AM Get the 4" and paint same color. Then swap them when you like something different. If it is a GM SS hood,..keep it. They are hard to find.
camaroman7d Dec 24th, 09, 07:44 AM I love hot rods/drag cars, but I would not change the look of your car. Anyone can add a cowl hood, not everyone has an SS hood. If you do go with a cowl, no more than a 2" please.4" cowls look good on some cars, but that look doesn't fit your car.
Once again your car looks GREAT like it is, I would leave it alone.
Jeremiah Dec 24th, 09, 07:45 AM If you have a mullet I think the 4" hood would be a good match, otherwise keep the SS hood.
purecam Dec 24th, 09, 08:05 AM Everyone has a cowl... Keep the stock one. Your car looks great!
3SuperSports Dec 24th, 09, 08:11 AM It looks great now, but get a 2" cowl hood for performance and don't get rid of the SS hood just in case you want to change back.
Eric Kammerer Dec 24th, 09, 08:14 AM I voted to leave it alone.
Before I bought this 69 (which had a GM cowl hood on when I bought it), I lusted after the cowl hood for both of my previous 1st gens. My 67 in high school had a flat hood, my 68 had the SS hood. I always loved the look of the cowl hood, which is one of the most iconic styling cues GM ever came up with.
But... without a functional flapper, there are some issues I did not envision. The cowl vent is obviously right there, so if you have any kind of underhood smells, they'll be coming in the vents at idle and low speeds. I have the carb pretty close to perfect now, so I don't get too much, but...
Also, without the flapper, you get more underhood noise in the car. Maybe this is more an issue with a vert, and generally the underhood sounds aren't bad sounding to a car guy, but they are there.
I plan to try closing mine off and see if I lose performance (I do not have the air cleaner sealed to the hood).
Also in your case, you are going to have to try to paint match a new hood, and that ain't gonna be easy with that color.
Finally, IMO a 4 inch cowl hood belongs on a car that is pretty modified and needs the clearance for the engine. On an otherwise fairly stock looking car, it may look odd.
HwyStarJoe Dec 24th, 09, 08:17 AM Normally I'd vote for the stock cowl (2") hood because I love 'em, but in your case I voted to stick with what's on there. It looks perfect for your car.... it 'fits' if you know what I mean.
Some cars beg for a cowl hood to spice them up. Yours isn't one of them.

impzilla Dec 24th, 09, 09:42 AM Looks great as is and a four inch may be a little too big. However, if its a great deal, grab it and see how you like it.
Great deals are easy to re-sell later and get your money back if you decide aganst it.
A extra hood wont hurt to have around...
Go get that hood for Christmas.
Camaro Mark Dec 24th, 09, 10:01 AM I had a feeling most of you would vote against a 4". Keep the opinions coming everyone!! Thanks and MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!!!
dawg Dec 24th, 09, 10:09 AM unless you need a cowl hood for clearance I would stick with the original.
but its your car do as you wish!

Yeah, ditto!

P.S. Beautiful '68 by the way...
ddx77 Dec 24th, 09, 10:19 AM Everyone has a cowl... Keep the stock one. Your car looks great!
I have a cowl hood and I am actually thinking about getting a plain jane hood for the car.
X2 - "everyone has a cowl"
Your car is perfect!
casey0272 Dec 24th, 09, 11:50 AM Keep the hood you have.Your car looks to cool as it is.JMO
S.s. hoods are the bomb....keep it!!!!
Kelly
DOUG G Dec 24th, 09, 12:14 PM If you install a cowl hood you'll look like 75% of the others out there...no offense to the cowl hood guys :)
Keep the SS hood.
Andrew69 Dec 24th, 09, 01:15 PM 1st Choice: Keep the hood you have
2nd Choice: Get a 2" Cowl Induction hood and get it painted to match your car. Swap them back and forth and see which one you favor.
3rd Choice: Get the 4" Cowl hood because it is cheap, but it wouldn't really look good on your original appearing car.
69CamaroRT Dec 24th, 09, 01:36 PM Keep the SS hood! Your car looks perfect as it sits!
x2. leave it alone. your car looks good with the ss hood
SixtyAte Dec 24th, 09, 01:37 PM Leave it as it sits now.....looks super !

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d180/Bad68Nova_/000_0005-2.jpg Mark i agree with others, your car looks perfect with the SS hood. Don't change a thing:thumbsup:.
rsbecool Dec 24th, 09, 01:51 PM I like it the way it is. Keep the SS hood on.
camaroman7d Dec 24th, 09, 03:28 PM There are a lot of cowl hoods out there for a reason, they look good. In this case his car has the right look and it would be hard to improve on that. Try a 2" cowl if that's what you want (it's your car), but a 4" would be a major mismatch to the look you have going. I just wanted to add that because I really hate "telling" other people what to do with their cars, you did ask though.
AlexFolino Dec 24th, 09, 08:16 PM 4" cowl looks good on certain cars that just have the glammer about them, 2" cowl looks great on any car, SS hood looks pretty good on most cars, but have you ever considered a stinger hood? Your car just has the right colors and rims for that look, atleast in my opinion!
ace's68 Dec 24th, 09, 08:19 PM I agree, everyone has a cowl, NO ONE has a stinger...
.Bad75. Dec 25th, 09, 01:05 AM The 4 inch cowl you better have a tunnel ram or something under it because thats like putting a sock in your trowsers with no real product :(. Go with a 2 inch cowl you can fit a 144 blower underneath it :)
Pro-Street69Camaro468 Dec 25th, 09, 04:37 AM I personaly love the look of the 2" cowl hood my car could use a 4" to get a bigger air cleaner but dont like the four inch look as much.I am with the majaurity leave your car as it is unless you plan more changes down the road.I think a four inch cowl hood has to be on a fat tire car with realistic flames to look the best....JMO...
ragingbull69 Dec 25th, 09, 07:09 AM Looks great with the SS hood. Keep it as is.
prostreet69camaro Dec 25th, 09, 07:24 AM If you have a mullet I think the 4" hood would be a good match, otherwise keep the SS hood.
You trying to say I have a Mullet. I have a 4" cowl hood..................
DOUG G Dec 25th, 09, 09:35 AM I agree, everyone has a cowl, NO ONE has a stinger...
:secret:SSSSSSSssssshhhhhhhhh.... :D
BonzoHansen Dec 25th, 09, 09:45 AM Stay SS. It seems like 90% of all 1st gens have cowls. And 4" cowls only belong on cars that need 4" cowls.
SY1 Dec 25th, 09, 11:19 AM Cowl hoods are great, but there are a lot of them out there. I understand the temptation. Couldn't pull the cowl hood off my 68Z quick enough, first thing I changed on the car, they don't look right on a 68Z to me. Your car looks great I'd leave the SS hood alone. I just sold a 68 SS just like yours except mine was red. I did consider a stinger like Alex suggested. It's all a matter of personal choice and what you like.
Cam6t9 Dec 25th, 09, 12:00 PM original gets my vote
1969 RS/SS DROPTOP Dec 25th, 09, 12:06 PM Supersport hood looks great, keep it.

Mark stay with the SS hood...
RSCopo Dec 25th, 09, 01:48 PM Your car looks great just as it is, if it were mine (I wish it was) I would leave it alone. Just my opinion, but I have never liked cowl hoods on 67 or 68's, love them on 69's.
Jeremiah Dec 25th, 09, 05:21 PM You trying to say I have a Mullet. I have a 4" cowl hood..................
Ha ha... Do you?
IMO the only cars that can make use of a 4" cowl hood are the ones that need it for clearance reasons, tall intake with dominator carb, charger etc.. The car questioned in this thread clearly doesnt need a 4" hood.
IMO the 4" hoods look bad even on an all out race car... no disrespect intended to anyone, just my oppinion.. "this thread is asking for oppinions.
I think it looks really clean the way it sits and a huge hood would ruin that.

No I dont have a mullet.
But I agree also. His car looks good like it is. Only reason I said to get it was he said he could get it for a good deal.
I have a blower sticking out of my 4" cowl.
Jeremiah Dec 25th, 09, 05:34 PM Yea, I noticed your sig, you would be one of my exeptions.
ratmotorred511 Dec 25th, 09, 05:46 PM I voted for the 4" but the more I looked I'd stay with the SS hood and ditch the pro star wheels and go with 15x8 rally wheels for the stock look:hurray:I'm going with the 4" but I'm going big on manifold and carb and need the room nice car you have:D
Jeremiah Dec 25th, 09, 05:56 PM If it were mine the only thing I would change would be to drop it a couple of inches and take the tag off the front... and maybe an RS set up down the road.
1968Motion427SSNova Dec 25th, 09, 06:14 PM Stay with the SS hood and get some vintage Ansen Aluminun slots or Cragar SS mags for that period correct Day 2 look!!
Microgiant Dec 25th, 09, 08:13 PM I voted to keep the stock SS hood, its the only "perfect" part on your car now how could you consider changing that? I vote to keep the SS hood but to swap the rest of the car for a 69. :D Then it would look perfect.
Pro-Street69Camaro468 Dec 26th, 09, 07:06 AM No I dont have a mullet.

Did you ever have one Mike I had the original one back in the day.I think we need to start a thread with original mullits....

No never had one just a pony tail in my younger days.
Hold on we are getting away for the original post.
Sorry
vonzipper396 Dec 26th, 09, 09:23 AM Its hard to ask others what should go on your car.Do you like the resto look ? keep the one you got .You like the drag look obviously with the pro stars big n littles and traction bars the 4" cowl would have a cool fastest street car look to it(which i like)and also leave room for motor improvements.I have a painted stinger hood for my car which gave it a nostalgia drag look but it had no more clearance than a 2" cowl so it had to go. P.S>no mullet here just lots of horsepower!
Pro-Street69Camaro468 Dec 26th, 09, 09:34 AM OK back to the thread if the hood can be bought cheep get it hold onto it for the next Camaro. Then we can build a big hp Pro-Street car....
Camaro Mark Dec 26th, 09, 04:46 PM I wanted it for clearance cuz I plan on a head and intake swap in the future. I think if anything I would maybe go with a 2" now.
Will an Airgap with a 1" spacer fit under my hood with sbc and my 3" drop base air cleaner???
MissionCritical Dec 26th, 09, 05:37 PM I too would keep the SS hood, as that is what my car had when I bought it and its still my favorite hood, with the standard cowl being second. I have a 4" however, and while it looks OK, I wish I could use a different hood. But I need the 4" for intake/carb/air cleaner clearance. Here is what it looks like, in a bright paint booth, and outside as the sun is setting:

I ran a 6" K/N filter with a GM dropped base and RPM intake on a small block. I had to trim about 3/8" off the rear opening on the underside of the steel cowl hood to make it fit though. When sitting in the car you could see the breather through the rear opening of the hood.
If I remember correctly you can fit a 4" filter with a one inch spacer on an RPM intake with no modifications.
BlackoutSteve Dec 27th, 09, 01:45 AM If you're choosing betwwen SS and cowl, you obviously don't need a 4" for any clearance issues.
And if you're considering keeping the SS, you don't seem to be concerned about having cold air induction.
Therefore, the choice you are making is a cosmetic one, and only hindered by the temption of a good deal on a hood you don't at all need.
I prefer SS hoods. Your car looks great with one.
Leaving it as-is with the SS hood is even cheaper than the smoking deal on a 4" isn't it? :p
mrmuncie Dec 27th, 09, 04:25 AM Keep the SS hood. If you paint another hood it's very likley you surrounding panels won't match. Light metallics are the hardest color to match. You would most likley have to blend the paint.
68 cars never came from the factory with cowl hoods
PS....If you car is a clone you should get rid of the 327 fender emblems and install some 350 ones. All SS small block cars has 350 engines:yes:
mrmuncie Dec 27th, 09, 04:31 AM Good luck trying to get an aftermarket hood to fit level to you fenders and header panel. I've seen 1/2 gallon of mud used to make it all look right.
DOUG G Dec 27th, 09, 04:33 AM I had a Vic Jr. and Holley carb under a stock flat hood...just used a drop base air filter.
BlackoutSteve Dec 27th, 09, 04:15 PM Good luck trying to get an aftermarket hood to fit level to you fenders and header panel. I've seen 1/2 gallon of mud used to make it all look right.
Tip. Never, ever use that panel shop!
SPARKY69 Dec 28th, 09, 04:19 AM This has got to be the longest thread about a hood..where i come from ,the rule of hoods, goes like this, stock car- stock hood, ss car- ss hood( ice cubes or cowl hood ) race car- race car hood..your car is hot rodded up a bit and the flat ss hood looks silly against all the hot rodded up parts(imo)..4 inch, is too much for your look..what do i know my wife keeps putting more rum in my eggnog!! Woo hoo!! Keep em coming honey!!
