big gear head May 12th, 01, 06:51 PM The stock axle in a 12 bolt has 30 splines. You can upgrade to 33 splines, but you have to replace your posi unit with one made for 33 spline axles. This greatly increases the strength of the axle, but the posi will still be the weak link. C clip eliminators will probably leak oil on your brakes. The best thing to do is have someone who realy knows what they are doing weld on a set of the Moser or Mark Willams housing ends that use the 9" Ford axle bearings. You can use your stock brakes with these ends. You have to order the axles special for this so it's not something that can be done at any time. Now is the time to do it since you are going to get new axles anyway. They have to be welded on with a fixture run through the housing to hold everything in a straight line. The advantage is that if the bearing goes bad you don't have to replace the axle, just the bearing. They will also hold the axle in the rear end if you break the axle. This is required by the NHRA and others if your car runs so fast. Moser axles run about $225 for C clip style, and the better ones are about $300 with studs and bearings. The housing ends are about $60.

dthiel May 15th, 01, 06:28 PM A note on using the Ford ends with your stock backing plates. Be sure to use the T style bolts to attach the backing plate to the housing end. If you use a standard hex head bolt it will potentially cause a raise in the inner surface of the housing end, right where your nice new bearing must reside, due to the head of the bolt being cocked when you attempt to tighten the backing plate. Trust me, I know what I am talking about!

Sounds like you may have dammaged yours. That is a good point. Did you have any problems repairing yours?

Well from what I can tell so far, the bearing seems to be fine. When I first noticed what was going on during the assembly, I pulled it apart before I ever got it tightened all the way down. I had made a little bump on the inner surface and I went and took my carbide grinder to it lightly and finished it off with some fine emory cloth. There was no visible damage to the bearings and they turned freely, Moser must use some pretty quality bearings. Like I said, seems to be fine to this point, but I am looking for any sign of a problem showing up. Here is a question for you since you are in the business. I am running a 4 pin Trak-Loc, what do you recommend for lube? I have a little gear whine as I am slowing from 30-20 and wondered if there is product out there to shut this up a little. I hear good things about Red Line. Opinion please?

big gear head May 17th, 01, 01:32 PM I use Amsoil series 2000 75W90 in all the LSD (posi)rear ends I build. I use the 75W140 with the lockers. I like it very much. The series 2000 needs no additive for the LSD unit. It will also cause the gears to run cooler and the oil is much more resistant to thermal breakdown (the main cause of damage for most rear ends I rebuild). I have been a Amsoil dealer for about 4 years now and I have it in everything I own that requires oil. Go to www.amsoil.com (http://www.amsoil.com) for more info and use customer number 504445 if you order anything. As for the gear whine, I don't think any oil will help that. It is either a problem with the way the gear was made, gear wear, or improper gear set up.

Thanks for the connection on the Amsoil. I have a buddy that is running the old Nash Inline 5 speed and he swears that the Red Line has quieted that tranny down, for what it is worth. I'll give your recommendation a try. Thanks again.
