: Tallest Building in the world opens today
zuma Jan 4th, 10, 01:20 PM Thank goodness I'm not the Chief Engineer of this monster... It is 5 times the height of my tower...(48 stories) and is over 2700 ft. Imagine the headaches that guy will have and you can't even drink in that country...lol

alanrw Jan 4th, 10, 01:34 PM But accordding to one report, the economy is so bad over there, the building is vacant!!!

ChevyThunder Jan 4th, 10, 01:41 PM Lots of building were vacant when I was there January of 2009 ... our joke was that the Bird of Dubai was the SkyCrane... then I read that 25% of the world total cranes are in operation in Dubai .
Everyday on our way to the race track the roads would change. They have so much construction going on that it was a fiasco getting into the track as they would close one road off and open another or close two and open a new one ... on and on .
Here are some photos I took when I was there

Stainless dog Jan 4th, 10, 02:21 PM I think they are in a bad money condition now.Are you sure about no alcohol?
zuma Jan 4th, 10, 02:28 PM Yes, I believe so SDtainless...Don't worry that building will fill up soon enough...
captcanuck68 Jan 4th, 10, 04:16 PM I must have heard incorrectly? But the news said that rent per night start at $2,000?

okiemark Jan 4th, 10, 04:57 PM :thumbsup:too bad they built the worlds tallest building so close to the end of the world. (2012)
Steptoe Jan 4th, 10, 10:33 PM But accordding to one report, the economy is so bad over there, the building is vacant!!!
Dubi is bust, another Iceland....
Brandan Jan 4th, 10, 11:46 PM hey nice pictures by the way
SPARKY69 Jan 5th, 10, 03:45 AM They said on the news that the top of the building sways 4ft back and forth!
Everett#2390 Jan 5th, 10, 03:53 AM Buildings are supposed to sway with the wind. Keeps them erect, so to speak.
Some of our skyscrapers have momentum rooms, very large, 4-6 ton concrete blocks, on rollers hydraulically controlled to dampen building movement during the winds, like a shock absorber. Sears Tower, John Hancock building to name a couple.
Four to six feet for 2000+ feet is stiff, but then, I'm no architect either. I'm sure the Science Channel will air a show on the building during its design planning and building.

it can sway 4 ft. back and forth 'cause they don't drink over there. Therefore, no hangovers or upset stomaches.
KevinW Jan 5th, 10, 04:29 AM Just to get pressurized water up to the top must be a feat! They must do it in small steps and holding tanks at intervals. And what about the stuff coming down!
cpodeep Jan 5th, 10, 06:05 AM I spent 3 months there back in 99.......I never had a problem getting a drink there! :D
zuma Jan 5th, 10, 07:09 AM On a windy day I set up a Plumb bob from the ceiling to the floor at the top of the tower and our "small" building moves as much as 18 inches or so...You should have seen it in the Loma Prieta Shaker of 87...
Everett#2390 Jan 5th, 10, 08:25 AM Yes, they do water supply and sewer disposal every 20-25 stories.
Pump up/down to a holding tank.
Imagine a gallon of water, 8 lbs, the force it would have from 150th floor to ground level.
Think about a 5 lb maul; drop it from your waist onto your front lawn and visualize the impression. Now, climb up the big oak tree or onto your second story roof, and drop the same maul, deeper impression - it's a gravity thing.

Basically it's about .5 lbs per linear ft...so 2700 ft high would be about 1350 psi at the ground level... How would you like working on a job on the 150 story and forget a screwdriver in the shop on the ground floor... well that's what the apprentice is for...;) go fetch...lol
rj68RS Jan 5th, 10, 02:23 PM I just love how the television news is talking about what a "engineering marvel" this tower is. I've traveled through the middle east quite a bit and seen a s#!t load of crappy construction. In my book if this thing is still standing in 25 years then it's a true engineering marvel.

Hey doesn't matter the world is ending in 2012 anyway...;)
Vintage 68 Jan 5th, 10, 09:21 PM This seems like some sort of 'size envy' post Mike :D
Bet you'd love to take a peek under that things skirt to see how everything is put together

Yep...My buddy was the Chief of that tower in Shanghai, the one that is about 88 stories and is the tallest in China...I need to ask him about the sewer risers...must have storage tanks with drains comming off of the top or top sides...:)
captcanuck68 Jan 6th, 10, 07:32 AM Would hate to be on the side walk if any of these holding tanks ever gave, eh?

I read, in Dubai you can go to jail for bad credit and they can keep you there awile.
There were about 3000 abandoned cars at the airport when the economy crashed.
People needed to get out fast or go to jail and do not pass GO! :)

zuma Jan 6th, 10, 07:58 AM Here is what my buddy emailed me about tall buildings...He was the chief engineer/director of the Jin Mao tower in Shanghai as well as spend some time on those twin tower in Malaysia;
Just as with the pressure systems, waste is also zoned. Many of these buildings would also have their own tertiary waste water treatment plants.
My "two-cents", building 100 plus stories are trophy buildings, especially in places where land is not an issue. They are complicated to build and operate, from the foundation to the roof. Just imagine the foundations...the Jin Mao Tower, built on soil not unlike where San Francisco is, has over 500 "slip piles" to prevent it from sinking...very costly. And then there is the window cleaning equipment, in the case of Jin Mao, roof mounted and several separate systems, as glass requires cleaning far more often than here (very dirty air). On the other hand, at Jin Mao, between the office building and the Hyatt hotel, I had over 80 engineers, and they were always busy!
Now that is a busy place!
zuma Jan 6th, 10, 08:18 AM Here is a link of the list of the tallest building in the world...Mine is not in there...lol

ZAPPER68 Jan 6th, 10, 08:12 PM My .25 worth....I live in Abu Dhabi which is the Capitol of the UAE and 80 miles down the road (40 minute drive if you are a local). When Dubai's bubble went 'pop' last year the good ole boys from Abu Dhabi stepped up to the plate and wrote a cheque for them to the tune of $10 billion to bail them out for interest on a load coming due.
As a result of the generosity exhibited by Abu Dhabi, the name of the Burg Dubai was changed to Burg Khalifa who just happens to be the President of the UAE. Now back to the Burg.
I have done countless aerial tours in Dubai over the last 3 years. During that time I have watched the Burg Dubai ....ooops Burg Khalifa grow from foundation to completion. I would purposely fly past the tower at 1500' and look up at the cranes perched on the top, swaying in the breeze. IMHO those crane operators are a special breed and a few tourists wondered what the operators did when it was time to go to the bathroom??
Last but not least, there hasn't been any problem having an alcholic beverage in the past 26 years I have lived here. Matter of fact, I just renewed my liquor license last week which allows both my wife and I to buy booze at any of the local outlets. If you are a resident here and have an 'incident' involving alcohol and don't have a liquor license, your life will take a very unpleasant turn....for the worst I might add.
Dubai certainly does have a 'bigger, better, best' attitude......unlike their wealthy brethern down the road here in Abu Dhabi.

67SS&99SS Jan 6th, 10, 09:23 PM These super large structures usually have dampers inside them that absorb the energy from external forces on the building to keep it stable. This one is inside a skyscraper in Taiwan. 660 Ton mass that occupies the 87th-92nd floors. Imagine the mess that would make if it fell.

 I think I see the makings of the Next DieHard movie ... the terrorist take over the buiding while the Pres. is there for a meeting and threaten to cut the 'bob-wieght' loose killing everyone (including themselves  ) if the government doesn't cough up 'One Million Dollars" ...
YouTube- Broadcast Yourself.
Then maybe ... Bruce could put a 'huge' Air-Bag under it and time the inflation "just in time" to stop the fall ;)
I'm just sayin ... l:)
garrynicole Aug 23rd, 10, 04:18 AM that is really innovative and great in look, but according to the economic conditions over there is not good ans the building is vacant.
CamaroBeau Aug 23rd, 10, 09:09 PM :thumbsup:too bad they built the worlds tallest building so close to the end of the world. (2012)
Are you sure its the end of the world on 2012? I have to see this one for real then. Anyway, my friend who is working in Dubai told me she saw few Camaro there. They should love American cars. :)
