i currently have vortec heads, and have for 2 years now. at first, the car seemed fast...but you know how that goes. after reading posts here and magazines that claim how awesome the AFR 195 is, i am just curious if anyone has any real world experience with these heads? how much power will i gain if i switch?i know all the magazines claim 500 hp with a hydraulic cam and all, but i want to know- NO QUOTING OUT OF MAGS, please... i have read all the stories...

I don't know about the 195s but a friend of mine has a set of 220s that were professionally ported to 288cfm in it will make 500hp on a dyno but it also has a .700 lift roller cam and 12 to 1 compression. AFR is really bad about claims. In the new Drive paper they guarantee their BB heads to make 175more HP than a factory iron head. I can only assume they ment a truck round port with 16 burnt valves. Vortecs are excellent street heads. You can make more power but it gets out of the realm of really being streetable.

I have heard that they are the best... Claiming a 175 horse increase with just heads though? As far as comparing to the Vortec heads, the 195 heads are port matched for a victor jr. single plane intake. You would undoubtedly lose a little low end with that setup. The 190 is made specifically for the RPM style intake which would probably be better for a street car. I have only met one person running them and he was happy with them. I don't know what kind of numbers he is putting up though.

i can get a victor jr from my cousin fairly easy, and a guy at work has a 850 dp demon(i know- too big), but i think i can make it work pretty respectable like.torque isn't really an issue in a nova with no options and a 4 speed... i just want to go fast- 400 hp is making me yawn.500hp would perk me up for a summer or 2.i have a 9 inch in the works, and suspension and brakes are the winter projects- along with the AFR's.
