I want to convert my 69 Camaro dash. Its got the standard gas guage at the right side. I want to install a repro center gas gauge and put a repro factory tach where the gas gauge now sits. Has anyone done this upgrade and I wanted to know how to, and where to wire the tach with the tach conversion harness that I will be buying along with the tach. Thanks in advance.

I did this conversion myself, and the templates and pictures that were posted help. I replaced my original dash carrier with a new reproduction unit. There was a guide for the tach cutout already embossed in the plastic, so all I did was use a drill and a hacksaw blade to get close. If you have a Dremel tool it would make it a lot easier. The fuel gauge cutout was much trickier and there's not a lot of overlap material left when you're done, so go slow. I rewired my car with the AAW Classic Update kit so all the wiring I needed was there.

The wiring is already in the orginal looms for the tach
The center cosol gauge comes with looms that more or less plugs straight into the orginal loom.

I found the pics I took as I moved everything over to the new dash carrier. You can see them at http://picasaweb.google.com/barryfrise/CamaroDash . Mounting the tach is a piece of cake. There are a couple of shots of the gas gauge mounted in the carrier but without the bezel installed. There are tabs at the bottom of the bezel that hook behind the carrier and I can remember having to do some special filing on the carrier to get the bezel to fit. The hole you cut out of the carrier has to be just a bit smaller than the bezel. The bezel mounts from the outside of the carrier and the fuel gauge mounts from the inside.

Do a search on this subject there is a lot of info regarding it. I did the tach install but not the center fuel gauge. Was able to do it with the carrier installed. The templates posted are good. Take them to a copy shop and make up several copies. Glue them to some cereal box material, it will make it easier to work with. The large outer circle will have to be trimmed down about an 1/8" or so. So that it will fit back into the carrier. That will get you where the new tach mounting holes will be. Which is most important. Use a dremel it works real nice. The little texas shaped cutout does not have to be perfect as it will be covered up. But the new mounting holes need to be correct. Use some small screws or bolts to hold the template in place using the old fuel gauge mounting holes. Then drill your new tach mounting holes.
