View Full Version : GM Roller Hydraulic Lifter Camshaft
rjrock Mar 4th, 02, 11:00 PM I currently have a GM hydraulic roller lifter. I would like to replace the camshaft, however I like to keep my GM roller lifter. I seek recommendations on a camshaft.
I like smooth idle and lotsa torque, 5500 rpm max. (My car has Carb 650 double pumper,
Hei ignition, headers, T56 tranny, A/c, P,S, 3.42 ringgear, edelbrock dual plane and vortec heads)
thanks

pdq67 Mar 5th, 02, 02:10 AM Go with a hydraulic roller that is below about 210 intake duration and you should be able to keep a smooth idle but yet produce more power then the stock cam, probably b/c of increased lift.
I do know that the old -929 standard hydraulic cam at 195/202 or there abouts is overshadowed by the "Performer" cam at 204/214 all over the curves and is still bone stock smooth! pdq67
Mark C Mar 5th, 02, 02:53 AM ZZ4 or Hot LT4 Cam.
ZZ4 is 208/221 .474/.510 on 112 degree lobe centers
LT4 is 218/228 .525/.525 (with 1.6 rockers) with 109 degree lobe centers
Both are available with and without fuel pump lobes, make sure you get the right one.
Heres what the two cams look like in a stock ZZ4 crate motor:

Heres a bunch of GM flat tappet and roller cams:

rjrock Mar 5th, 02, 10:12 PM Isn't the distributor for the Lt-4 motor or
Lt-1 motor in the front. How will that work
on the "old type chevy motor"
Tell me your pulling a fast one on me!

Mark C Mar 6th, 02, 03:08 AM Yes, the LT-4 has a front mounted distributor, its geared off the front Cam gear, but these engines also have a dummy gear drive (essentially the lower end of a distributor) in the rear to drive the oil pump. Theres a picture of the cam on the first link I posted above, just scroll down the page a bit. Also the LT-4 cam has a 112 lobe centerline, not 109 like I posted above.
I'm putting the LT-4 cam in my car as we speak (write) so I know it fits just fine. Desktop dyno shows somewhere arouond 400 ft lbs of torque at 3000 rpm and a peak HP of about 355 at 5000 rpm with 9.72 compression, stock 186 heads (2.02/1.60) and a dual plane intake. I'm running stock exhaust manifolds which is robbing about 40 ft lbs and 30 to 40 peak HP.
The cam itself is only $175 from GM (I got mine from Scoggins-Dickey they have a website) but the retro fit (if you need this style) rollers are about $300. If you've got a roller block then you probably only need the cam itself. I also replaced my springs to support the higher lift and because they were 32 years old.

rjrock Mar 6th, 02, 03:56 PM Anyone have a ZZ4 camshaft GM part number?
camaro-69ss Mar 6th, 02, 06:31 PM The stock ZZ4 cam part number is 10185071
the "Hot Cam" part number is 24502586
I've got the Hot Cam in my ZZ4 and it dyno'd at 411 HP
novaderrik Mar 6th, 02, 09:45 PM I LOVE my HOT cam... idles smooth, good torque and throttle response, and revs like there is no tomorrow.

rick Mar 7th, 02, 09:06 PM FYI - The AutoCenter in Dallas has good prices on GM takeoff parts, including the roller cams: http://www.goautocenter.com/super_deals.htm They are good folks to deal with.

Ed Bleich Mar 8th, 02, 04:03 AM rjrock,
If you are looking for the zz4 camshaft (as opposed to the HOT cam), I have one in my garage that has never been used. I immediately put in the HOT cam when I got my ZZ4 last year.
