My 69' has a 406 small block and I need to remove the starter. While removing the nut that secures the battery cable to the solenoid the brass bolt that holds the nut twisted off  At any rate not sure if I can replace just the solenoid or if I must do the whole starter??? After looking it over it looks like the starter must come off either way. I removed the negative ground bolt and another small bolt that appeared to be involved in securing the starter but no luck. These are the only two bolts I can see

So How do I get the starter off and can I just replace the solenoid???????

the starter is held to the block by the two big bolts back by the flywheel and (sometimes) a brace at the front that goes up to the block. that's all that holds the starter in place, but the wires going to the solenoid also need to come off- i think they are something like a 7/32" socket or something like that- it's been a while since i've taken off a starter.
and yes, you can just buy a solenoid. should be under $20 at any parts store. take the old one with toe match it up, since they made a couple of different variations over the years. the solenoid comes off the starter by taking out the two bolts where it bolts to the nose cone and the small bolt that hooks up to the copper thing poking out of the starter by the end cap. give the solenoid a twist after removing those 3 bolts, and it pops right off.
