View Full Version : need cam suggestions for my 383 build
tommyg Dec 22nd, 04, 08:34 AM The car is a weekend cruiser. Do not drag race but I do drive the car hard occasionally. The car is show quality. I want enough vaccum to run all accesories.
I plan to go with a solid flat tappet.
With that being said - the basics of my build are as follows:
383 stroker
10.0:1 compression
AFR 195 cc heads
RPM Air Gap intake
Hooker super comp headers 1 3/4"
Dr gas X pipe 3" into X 2.5 out
Muncie M20 4spd
4:10 rear
26" tall tire
The cam in my current 355 is a hydrolic 230/236 @ 50 , 487/490 lift all on a 110. I have 1.6 rockers on the intake.
I like the this cam for my 355 so I would like something similar. This cam comes in aroun 2,200 and pulls to 6k.
6D9 Dec 22nd, 04, 08:51 AM I am running the same cam as that in my 408sbc. But its the solid version xs274s. Works great. I would just reuse it from the 355.
travis Dec 22nd, 04, 09:37 AM If you had a bit more compression, the cam I run in my 388 would work very nicely for you. I run a comp 294s solid. Its old school, but it will last a long time, sounds naughty, and pulls like a freight train from 2500-6500 rpms. It also pulls 12-13" idle vac at 900 rpms with a dual plane intake, lashed on the loose side, and with careful timing tweaks. With my 10.3-1 388, it cranks 185psi cranking compression, and even with my iron heads I think it would run fine on 87 octane fuel in a pinch. I also have a 3200-3400 stall convertor and 4.10's...my street tires hate me.
tommyg Dec 22nd, 04, 09:40 AM what are the specs on the 294S.
travis Dec 22nd, 04, 12:00 PM Single pattern, 294@.020, 250@.050, .525 gross lift, 110 lsa, 106 ica.
Eric68 Dec 22nd, 04, 01:31 PM I'd go smaller than the 294S with only 10:1 compression.
I was thinking about the 282S. Specs are 282* advertised, 236* @ 050, .495" lift, 110* LSA.
If its a street only type car then I wouldn't bother with a cam that has agressive lobes like the XS solids -- the Magnum line will be easier on parts and will last a long time on the street.
Just my opinion.

edelbrock performer RPM cam.
works as low as 9.4:1 compression ratio.
i have a 383, 750 holley
air gap edelbrock manifold
cast iron stock heads with enlarged valves, 2.02 intake 1.94 exhaust...
flowtech heads w/ 3 inch collector.
350 turbo tranny. not even built.
runs hard.
tranny when done with run it harder.
try different combos.
perhaps if you want a little more low end torque you should go with a crane middle ground cam that would be between the specs of an edelbrock performer and performer rpm. your stroker if done right should make up for it. be careful though, because the more radical you get the harder it is to tame.
SLEEPER 86 May 6th, 06, 05:24 AM i went with the xs282s because i really liked the attitude of the xe274 that was in my 350, i figure it should act about the same with 28 more cubes.
STILL not on the road yet,but i'll let you know when it's done!

My XS274S specs at 236/242 with 501/510 lift with 1.5 rockers. 110 lobe as well.
LukeSkywalker May 8th, 06, 08:15 AM I am running the 282S in my stroker. It is a great cam, runs VERY strong, yet has plenty of vacum with a slight lope to the idle. I was actually hoping for more of a lope than it has. Overall a great cam IMOP. Also, it was a small enough cam I did not have to put special springs on the heads during breaking the engine in.
RickD May 8th, 06, 10:46 AM I had the magnum 282S in my 355. Slight lope, great street manners and good vacuum.
NER perf May 8th, 06, 11:35 AM why does everyone here always run a dual pattern cam on afr heads  none of those exh ports come close to needing more exh duration because of lack of exh flow. all these cars would run better with straight up numbers or even more int duration :)
Eric68 May 8th, 06, 12:53 PM Good point NER perf. There are some killer heads out there with great exhaust ports that are being used with dual pattern cams.
In this particular case the E/I ratio on AFR 195's at .500" lift is 73%. That is kind of in the dual pattern range IMO -- but could go either way. This might be one of those where a higher ratio intake rocker on a dual pattern cam may work well.
What do you guys think about this? Here is my thumbrule -- based on what I've seen and read.
75%-80% E/I ratio single pattern cam.
70-75% E/I ratio 4-6* more exhaust duration.
65-70% 8-10* more exhaust duration.
I had the 294s in it but we pulled it out before we put the motor in because most felt it was to large for the comp ratio I have.
