Is it just me or is the motor a restamp? The numbers just dont look right on the block?

the motor stamp looks "restamped" to me the slight sand marks just over the numbers.... and no where else on the pad?

The engine pad stamping is real, IMO.

I have seen this wierd mismatched VIN font on 68 LOS cars before. Each plant has thier own stamps for the VIN and they change over time. The only way to confirm is to have a large database of known good stamps, which I do not have so I can't comment.

The engine assy stamp should be the similar to the engines used at NOR because they where stamped at Tonawanda, not LOS or NOR.

Anyone know what the asking price on this car was?

I would agree it's real
Los Angeles/Van Nuys Partial stampings are strange through the beginning of production of early 68's.
Here is a car built a month following;
13934
(Note the large '1' and the spacing between the 'L' and the VIN)

The convertible in question is one week behind mine, and the tag looks consistant with time period.

This car was on ebay with an asking price of $64,500 and bid up to $30K
There where no stamps shown in the auction.

I am the person with the deposit on the vehicle. The motor has been restamped. The person that rebuilt the motor in 2003 decked it because of the pitting seen in the picture. The block was photographed, and affidavits signed regarding the restamping and why it was done. Ideally, you should never restamp a block for any reason. I certainly wish that they hadn't on this one. However, I have searched high and low for a black / black convertible which as you all know is very rare. I have spoken with ever owner of the vehicle since the mid-70's, starting with the second owner and I am comfortable with the fact that it is a solid, rust free vehicle. The picture of it stripped to the bare shiny metal during restoration is a thing of beauty!

The motor restamp definitely affects the price and value of the car, but I can live with it if the car is everything that I expect it to be when I inspect it this weekend.

That car is a beauty! Looks like you went into this with your eyes open. Good luck.
You'll want to change out that Firebird radio bezel.

Yea. The woodgrain bezel just doesn't do it! Also needs a plated brake booster / cap and an original style Delco battery.

SUPER NICE CAR !!!

So do you have before and after photos of the engine pad?

I have seen even odder VIN stamps from early 68. I have one that has at least 3 different fonts used in the partial VIN. It is not a Camaro block, its is from an Impala, but has a LOS partial VIN stamp.

Please clarify, is this the original stamp before decking or the restamped pad as it is now?

They were assembled on the same lines in the same plant ;)
So the engines were deracked and prepped for the installation in the same place, thus the stampings should look the same.
I'm pretty sure they would have set-up two different gangs stamps and the only major difference (other than application specific suffix) should be the VIN sequence for Full Size vs. Camaro.
