I bought this partially disassembled Camaro in the summer of 2005. I was working on another project and up untill recently, I've only picked at it to get it totally stripped.

I started working with the doors. I wanted to get a good set of doors on the car before I started cutting anything off so I have something to fit everything to. Four doors came with the car, I figured with a set of new skins, I should be able to make two.

I was wrong. The skins on the doors that were original to the car were bondo'd to what was left of the original door frames. The other set, which were also original GM doors,
had holes all over the skins and the inner frame practically crumbled away while taking off the skins, so i ordered new doors too.

I started going after the floor, my thinking was start from the bottom and work my way up. The quarters were junk, badly done 80%s that were covered with rust and bondo and in some spots brazed in. So I cut them out of my way first.

That was a quick presentation of the progress I've made in the last year. Today, I'm at the end of a two week vacation. Most of it was spent "out there". I fit the new floor, framerails and trunkpan in, just fit and screwed together for now, I've decided to change the inner rockers also. (Fed Ex just dropped them off) Most of this week was spent on the firewall. Alot of cutting, beating, banging, patching, fitting, welding, and grinding to convert a rusty, dented and screwed full of holes firewall into something smooth and maybe even nice to look at. It's almost done but not quite there yet. I'll have pictures of my past two weeks' adventures up soon.

UNEZRYDR, My plan? Good question. My plan is five pages long. No really, 3 years of research and studying and pricing, I've typed out a five page word document complete with reference pictures and all, titled "The Plan".

Since the original engine and transmission are gone and it's going to be, what, 80-90% new sheetmetal, an "all original" resto would just be silly to me.I would love to go the full blown pro touring route, but my pockets are not deep enough and I'm not that young. The more I spend, the longer it'll take!

I'm going for a hot rod that I can jump in any day or nite and go anywhere and be really comfortable and look really bada$$ doing it. This car WILL be driven when I'm done, road trips, drag passes and trips to work regularly.

I've been watching your thread, and a few others, almost daily. doing so enabled me to muster up the courage to do this myself. Many times I contemplated trying to sell it and the new parts without losing my shirt in the deal. Then I figured "If they can do it, why can't I?" Like I said before. It took a while to make the first cut, but after that one, it was nothing to it.

The floor and trunkpans fit pretty well, I think. I've got this gap, on the left side, from the top of the framerail arch down to just where the trunk and floor pan meet. It fits well trough the rest of the curve then a gap again to the end of the framerails.

The rite side framerail fits great against the floor and trankpan. On both sides, there's a gap between the framerail flanges and the floor.

Here's how my rear valance panel fits. It looks real good rite behind the trunkpan flange, instead of being under it, and outside the trunk drop offs instead of inside.

http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg61/kicka_photos/1968%20camaro%20restoration/3%20sheetmetal%20replacement/303-1.jpg

It's flush agaist the framerails with about a 5/8" gap at the gas tank support flanges.

http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg61/kicka_photos/1968%20camaro%20restoration/3%20sheetmetal%20replacement/304-1.jpg

I've read about the aftermarket rails being to long and I've read about the aftermarket trunkpans being too short.

I'm guessing that I'll wait till I get the new quarters fit to determine what needs to be done here.

I smoothed the rite side of the firewall where the hole for heaterbox was. I made a cardboard template and transferred to an old hood I had on hand. I cut it out and double checked it against the firewall. I then cut that side of the firewall off and welded the new patch on.

Then I spent time banging out dents, cutting out a few rust spots and making patches for them, and making little patch plugs for all of the drilled out spot welds and I welded them up. After smoothing all the welds, I shot the "new" firewall" with epoxy primer. Pictures of that soon to come.

Hey Kicka, the fit of the rear valance doesn't look right from what I remember. With the valance sticking past the rear trunk pan flange it is going to be impossible to get the tail panel to come up flush to this flange and weld to it. I really encourage you to check out Cheby2's 1968 rustoration. He had by far the best most informative pics and descriptions of this phase. I followed his pics and footsteps on my 67 Vert and it all came together beautifully. Here is his link for all his pics. Check out around pic #327 of his collection and you will see how his and mine fit together. I really hope this helps. Proper alignment in this area will really save you some serious aggrivation. :beers:

Make sure you test fit your front leaf spring pockets between your floor and frame rails to make sure they fit. If the holes don't line up you're going to be kicking yourself later. After you get those lined up, it is just a matter of tapping the tabs on the frame rail so they are against the floor and plug weld them. Also get yourself an 18R vice grip clamp. This will help you close the gap between the frame rail and trunk floor.

The rear valance is welded to the trunk floor, so yours needs to move inward.

Could it be that you were sent the 1969' Frame rails, as there about an inch longer in that area?

Jeff & Steve, that's what I was getting at, something ain't quite rite. I don't know if it's long framerails or a short trunk pan (i've read about both) or both, but I'm going to leave it as is for now, not gonna make any modifications to anything till I'm ready to fit all the pieces involved (quarters, tailpanel, etc). Rite now, I'm gonna finish the firewall then remove and replace the inner rocker panels.

Gene, thanks for the heads up, I hadn't thought of that. Gonna try to do that today or tommorow before removing the floor again.

The infamous 68-69 rear frame rails. One universal product for two dimensionally different parts.

I just laid under my camaro and the best length measurement i could get was on the bottom side from the rearmost hole in the frame, not the slit, the actual oval hole. Anyway I measured as best as I could on my self shortened frame rails and on the pass side I got 6 3/4 inches to the end of the underside of the frame and on the drivers 6 1/2. So if you got a longer measurement than those you need to shorten them.

Lookin' great! You're on the right track and at a record pace too!

I just caught up with your thread and the issues you have encountered. I crossed the same bridges with my build too, and conquered each of them using some help from the good ol' BFH. (ask me if you need to know)...

These parts may be repros and claim to fit, but you will have to manipulate them into position sometimes (more than not) to make them fit properly. You'll get it. Keep pluggin.

Been picking at the rocker panels; I've removed the inners, given the inside of the outers a good wire brushing and banged out some dents from the back side. Next, I plan to hit the inside of the rockers, inner and outer fenderwells, the floor and trunk pans with epoxy primer then start putting all back together. I hope to have some more pictures to show soon.

Gosh, I hadn't realized it's been so long since my last post, wow how time flies. It's been just as long too, since I've made any major progress on my Camaro. Been busy as he!!, just not on the car. I have been picking at it though, here and there, blasting, priming and painting various small parts like bumper brackets, hood and trunk hinges and so on. Any progress is forward progress. That's what I keep telling myself. It all needs to get done anyway, right?

One thing I've come across has brought up a question. I noticed when I cleaned up my vacuum reservoir (RS headlight doors), there was a fair amount of rust dust and crud sloshing around in it. I shook most of it out and blew out the rest with an air hose.

What should I do, or, what have you done to prevent further deterioration inside the tank? I was thinking about one of those gas tank sealers out there but wanted to ask the pros here first.

Man this was a pleasure to read! Remarkable progress! Maybe I missed it, but where did you get your sheetmetal from? are you happy with it? And the place you got it e-coated, do they re-chrome parts?

I know what you mean about the plan.. I've scratched around for a while before coming to my build. I'm going with a cool Big Block, nice roller cam, a TKO 500, 12 bolt, and the last thing I cant make up my $2k question is, a 177ci under the hood roots blower or FAST EZ-EFI. either one would be killer fun to drive!

You guys arent too far away! MS here

Thanks Jason. I had it dipped and ecoated through Select Motor Company (www.selectmotors.net) in Ball, La. It's just outside of Alexandria. I also bought my sheetmetal from them. They are distributors for Classic Industries and gave me excellent pricing. I picked it all up when they were through with my shell (no shipping charges). I 'm not sure about the chrome plating, check on their website under services.

Well, I figured I should post, seeing how it’s coming up on a year since my last. Where in the world does the time go? Oh yeah, I remember, another summer of coaching little league, 11 y.o girls softball and 6 y.o. boys T-ball. I keep telling myself, “Gotta post some progress, gotta post some progress”. But something always gets in the way. I have been making some progress but not at record pace. You see, I’ve gotten into something else with my daughter that’s a little more time consuming than softball.

It’s a lot of fun, a lot of work, but the smile on that kid’s face after every pass is priceless. My take is the last ten years of raising her were easy; it’s the next ten that I’m worried about. This is my attempt at keeping her close thru those years. And let’s face it, would most dads rather spend time at softball games and dance recitals or at the racetrack. I’m just very thankful that I have a wonderful wife to go along with my somewhat different approach! The only bad part of my plan is that next year, I gotta figure out a way to get another car, he's already itching to go!

Now, for my progress…..
Since my last installment, as you’ll see in the pictures, I've modified the frames and fit a set of fourth gen seats in, I’ve finished my modifications to the firewall, and patched up the bad areas to the cowl panel behind the firewall.

This is where I'm at now, I’ve got all of the rear sheetmetal held in place with sheetmetal screws. I just received my new trunk lid yesterday, that's the old one in the pics, obviously, and now my task at hand is to start massaging these panels to make them fit better than they do now. Those of you who’ve done it already, you know what I’m talking about.
