Hi, what is the difference between a powerglide shifter and a 400 shifter? Is it just a bracket on the trans or is the shifter itself totally different?

Thanks in advance
Chris

i believe its completely different. mine came with a power glide and when i put my TH400 in i had to change shifters completely because power glide is only 2 gears and i had to change to something with 3. so i just threw on a generic B&m ratchet. anyone correct me if im wrong.

They are the same, but you need to swap out the detent plate. It can be found at www.shiftworks.com.

No, actually the bottom of the PG and THM400 shifter are different. I had pictures that show the difference on an old computer. Will see if I can find them, or if not, I have a PG shifter in the parts bin that I can get a picture of, and maybe someone take the same of a 400 shifter.
I learned when installing a 700r4 once in a car. The trans hit the PG shifter, but not the 400 shifter I replaced it with.

I concur with 2 of the above. While the PG and TH400 shifter look alike the shift detents are different and the bottom is different (the part that goes under the car to the left side) because the TH400 is wider than the PG.

If you can find one, a TH350 floor shifter from a Nova (or X-car clone) works great and you can't tell the difference (if there is any at all).

i think that shiftworks sells the whole conversion for the 700r4, so they might have the 350/400 as well. on their website they are showing all the conversion pieces...

To add a little more info here, the neutral safety and backup light switch is in a different postiion. The 400 is shorter and wider. The lever is the same on both of them. When I put my 700R4 in my 67 I used the 400 body and shift works kit and it worked great. Good Luck Norm
