: my 67 LS1/4l60 swap
c6matt Feb 11th, 10, 12:07 PM Let me start by saying thanks to 67rsss his build thread has helped me more than he will ever know, and Many of his tricks were used in my build. Build started last october and is almost done, Posts are lifted from another forum I'm on, which is why posts a week later are posted on the same date ect...
So after having a blast on powertour this summer I began planning a "more appropriate" car for next year. I Have old cars, but none that would be good for a week of highway and late night sheninagans.
The 67 camaro has a fresh 327 4bbl but it has a powerglide. Looking at the net I found that 200-4R's are a pretty popular swap. But for a performance trans, crossmember and misc parts it was looking to be $2300 for the swap. I was thinking this would be the best option to gain some "smoke-em" ability and long legs for the highway. But as fate would have it I stumbled across a 50K LS1 4L60E on craigslist that I could drive before I bought. So the project has taken a twist..

Radcannon Feb 11th, 10, 02:44 PM Flint Mi huh??? Going to Kettering finishin up there right now. Love the LS motors but I had to keep my beauty with the SB and no computers. Will be a screamer, maybe could check it out sometimes or we could crusin. I am just finishing up my blown 95 T/A now, the camaro is in Kansas City.
Man if you need something let me know too. Around working for the General might be able to help you out. Good work

I graduated kettering in 04 (as well as my wife)... M.E.-auto
But no gm hook-up needed, I'm already in good with a guy or two there....
Its a tech rods harness, I have been very pleased with it. I have a 77 formula with a 4 speed, 400 and big carb for when I feel like leaving computers behind

Thanks, I am starting to feel impatient for warm weather. Still for to get the exhaust installed (magnaflow) and fab up som custom mid-pipes. Also need to find/build an 8.5 10 bolt to beef up the rear. I got a set of 15x8 corvette rallys for the rear, going to mount some 255/60/15's (better than the 215's on there now)

Small world. Thats what I am finishing up right now... Your probably know some of the people I run around with. And I see you were one of the few to find a woman around that place. I had to outsource. Probably nice with both you making bank though. A or B section?? And what compelled you to stay in flint if you don't mind me asking? You got to be on the west side or else you wouldn't have half those cars.
Nice collection of cars btw... I am on my way there hopefully in like 5 or 6 years I can catch up. I miss my LS1.
magisnyc Feb 11th, 10, 10:33 PM As far as the intake, are you getting much airflow the way you have it routed? Do you have a cold air duct coming up from underneath or something?

I live up in birch run... but thats flint to the outside(internet) world,
I was B-section, and I am in the area because I love my job.. (it involves test tracks)

there is plenty of airflow behind the headlight, the whole front of the car is a high pressure zone, it finds its way in.. and FWIW most "ram air/cold air kits" do next to nothing for performance.

motive axles, hopfully the 8.5 will hold up better than the 8.2 would... I'm planning on adding boost next year
Radcannon Mar 5th, 10, 03:34 PM What you planning on boosting her with?? been toying with the idea of nitrous or boost on my motor. Thinking of going 150 shot route.

my buddies all run turbo's but I really like the edelbrock supercharger system.. and it would be a weekend install... :hurray:...but not sold one either just yet... if I go turbo it will be a larger single..
Radcannon Mar 7th, 10, 07:43 PM Ya, never heard of edelbrocks setup. Definitely twin turbo setup is in store for next engine.

LT1 is a great motor too many. I just converted an LT1 I got to LS1 PCM. Its always an option.

I would recommend looking for a truck 5.3 . you can find them really cheap and have all of the ls1 power potential. and its iron block/al heads just like your lt1 (assuming vette/fcar lt1). And if you wanted to put in an ls2 later its all bolt in...

i just put in the lt1 im still in the hookup process runnin into some things witgh power steering/cooling system hook ups its a fbody lt1 (accesorys on pass side/alum head) i got the painless/ecu kit. it deletes mass air to speed density. still havint fired it up yet. but i didnt know you can use a ls1 ecm on a lt1

the main reason is to convert is to get rid of the optispark and get the reliability and tuning flexibility of coil on plug that all ls1's have:thumbsup:

Correct, I hate the optispark, and the LS1 pcm has endless possibilities. I am setting it up for a hybrid tune on my boosted car. Maf when out of boost and convert to speed density when under boost.
eficonnection.com the set is there about 800 to do later on down the road.
Hooking up coolant and power steering shouldn't be bad. Carquest or someone similar can make some lines for you pretty easy, or you could just buy fittings. Also the coolant lines, I would try and get an F body Lt1 radiator, will cool better and should be compatible with stock hoses.

as for power steering it would be a great time to upgrade to a iroc box.... it will arrive ready for your metric fittings!

that was with the old non-posi 8.2" 2.73 rear.. I installed the 8.5" 3.73 posi axle/shocks/caltrac's yesterday. so due to changing the diffrential my shortened drive shaft is too long, now I am ordering a chromoly one. Parts cannon BOOM! :D
c6matt Mar 30th, 10, 11:29 AM still waiting on c-clips for the axles (supposedly shipped friday). Magnaflow exhaust arrived, it is beautiful!
I got the new parking brake cables installed, parking brake works! (probibly the first time in 30 years!) new drive shaft is installed. So once I get the exhaust installed and mid-pipes fabb'd up the project is ready for tryout/debugging. :hurray:
c6matt Apr 12th, 10, 07:16 AM Car is all back together, magnaflow exhaust sounds sweet. still waitin on my 15" rallys for the rear but I took it out to the local cruise spot on saterday. No major problems, forgot to hook up the heater blower motor (fixed) and I have a vibration in the driveline around 25 mph. I think I have too much down angle on my pinion. So I have some shims and an angle finder ordered from summit, should be here this week. Going in for an alignment tonight. The car drives fantastic with the new powertrain. Need to let the new rear gears get broken in before I get on it too much...its very hard to do!
c6matt Apr 16th, 10, 03:47 PM I needed to put some axle shims to adjust pinion angle to fix the drive shaft vibration. I had previously installed the axle with u bolts that came with a kit from a camaro restoration place. Backing the nuts off the u bolts the metal just msmeared like they were made of wax...nice 3/8" ching chong metal..... So now I am waiting on summit to deliver some good (expensive-ish) 1/2" u bolts to put the axle all together. so much for having it all done last night. Parts should be in monday so no miles on it this weekend..
But here are some pics
new drive shaft..

67SS&99SS Apr 17th, 10, 10:00 PM Your project looks sweet! I love the LS1 in my 99 SS. The performance is unreal with just a set of headers, a nice intake and exhaust. What do you plan on doing with the 327 stuff? I could use that thermostatic coil and the linkage thats on your intake and carb for my 72 Nova as I'm swapping from a cast iron intake with a two barrel to an edelbrock performer and a q-jet. Let me know if you would be intrested in selling it.

thanks.. I am planning on keeping all the stuff for right now, but if it changes I will keep you in mind.:beers:
c6matt Apr 29th, 10, 07:30 AM those hose forming coils arnt worth a bent dick.... so I made a bracket for the hoses out of aluminum and mounted it to the inner fender.
I also mounted the cruise control module (2001 s10) and routed / hooked up the cable. Need to wire it up, I got a 89 corvette turn signal lever (one of the few gm levers without wiper controls with cruise buttons) and a stock 70 chevelle lever and will figure out a way to make the corvette lever use the chevelle mounting tab, so it will bolt right on to my stock column and put the lever in the stock location
car was running super rich and was mis-firing on cyl #6 so new oxygen sensor (local autozone only had 1) is on its way from rock auto (and new plugs).
I installed the radiator braces from summit last night as well, nice heavy billet, very happy with the quality. pics to follow.
vr1967 Apr 29th, 10, 12:11 PM Matt,
Look at a wiper lever for an 81-84 GM full size truck with cruise. It should bolt right up, and has only cruise on it.

vr1967 Apr 30th, 10, 10:11 AM You can try LMCtruck.com They dont show it online, but they have them in the print catalog. I am not at home, so I can't look in mine to give you information.
vr1967 Apr 30th, 10, 08:10 PM Also, I might have one at home, as a friend and I have a few 81-87 trucks on the back of the place for parts, from when we were 4x4ing.
Will be at least a week before I am home, as I am offshore at the moment.

Here are some pics of the accy brackets & pulleys that make AC, Alt. etc. easy & custom looking. Awesome job on the transplant....have done several and each has it's unique challenges. We ended up fabbing our own headers so sidepipes could be used. Designed & made easy swap drum-disc conversion kits to fit using 84-87 vette calipers & rotors. You will love the car, 25mpg plus and all the power you could want but looks like a bone stock sleeper classic w/your hood closed. I like it!

c6matt May 4th, 10, 04:27 AM Sooo I've got about 160 miles on it now, just checked all the exhaust bolts, and the 02 sensors fixed the rich condition and the plugs/02's fixed the mis-fire i was getting. The car runs really nice.
Comparison of old vs new u bolts...

KevinK7 May 4th, 10, 03:50 PM ...Awsome job, ...thanks for posting :)
I've got one with the same color combo, ...but with 39,000 original miles (matching 327/275) I won't be swapping any time soon... (but I've got a '67 vert that I am really thinking about...)

really beautiful car.. my car was a 327 210 car.. so I just tucked away the factory numbers matching engine. I didn't like the gold at first but now wouldn't think of changing it, I agree, its a cool vintage look. The LS1 makes the carss sooo much fun! Def consider it for the vert!
KevinK7 May 5th, 10, 06:25 AM Matt, ...you referenced a thread/build by "67RSSS" , ...could you post a link to it here? (I searched but couldn't find).
My initial thoughts for my '67 (vert) was to put a 4L60E trans behind a stock looking SB 350, ...but this LS build is really starting to catch my attention

vr1967 May 12th, 10, 06:46 PM Well, I HAD the turn signal lever you needed. I have several trucks parked on the back of a friends place. Well, his nephew (about 10) went back there and tore up a bunch of stuff! One of the things he broke was the lever that you need. He also knocked the windshield, and 2 side windows out of my crew cab dually, that I had over there due to having dropped the insurance on it! Mad isnt the exact work to describe how I feel at the moment. Friend said he would pay for it, but he is strapped in this economy. (He also had his 3/4T parked there with dropped insurance, and it needs a few windows too)
Will keep my eyes open for one.

thanks, i was able to look at one in a friends truck, it appears they are a 3 wire instead of a 4, not sure if it would work with the newer module i have. My soloution was to take a 70 chevelle arm (for the mount) and a 89 corvette arm (for the switch) and weld/epoxy/press (yes, all 3!) it together.
Drove the camaro to work for the first time yesterday, about 55 miles each way, 1/2 mile down the road i hit a bird and brake my original grill, new one is on its way..
where the bird broke the grill..effin robin

not sure if your messing with me, no offence either way!:beers:
its a magnuson TVS2300 supercharger (uses the same internals as the ZR1's supercharger) and fits under the flat hood.. only running about 6lbs of boost right now. prob step up to 8 in the spring with a smaller pulley
BPOS Jan 5th, 11, 01:14 PM No - not messing with you at all! I just read through your thread and all of a sudden there it was w/o any fanfare. Looks great and I bet it runs great as well. Good work.
