I am probably getting a 400 small block soon, and am trying to come up with some good combos I could make with it. I currently have a set of trick flow 23 degree aluminum heads and 1.5 roller rockers that I will probably use. I'm looking for suggestions on what cams might be good, compression ratio, etc. A roller cam setup would be nice, but due to the cost I'm probably looking more likely at a hydraulic flat tappet or a solid cam. The car is a daily driver, so I was thinking build it for lots of torque in a useable rpm range? Anyone who has a 400sb combo, or suggestions I'd appreciate them. Thanks.

I forgot to mention, I have a 274XE w/ lifters sitting at my house, I'm not set on using it,but it's an option. I don't think I will be putting any nitrous on this motor, so are there any specifics I should be concerned with when picking out bottom end parts?

I have a eagle crank and rods almost used the xe 274 but dyno showed 30 ft pounds and 20 horse more on bottom end they dyno my comdo with both the xe274 and the282 solid.

You know I'm kind of getting off subject, but if the car will be a daily driver why not look into an overdrive tranny and some deeper rear end gears. A 700R4 has a 3.05 1st gear which when combined with a 3.55'ish rear end will really wake up your car on the bottom end.

A 3.55 gear and 700R4 trans is the equivalent of 4.28 gears with a TH350/TH400 trans except you can still cruise on the freeway at 80 if you want. I might go that route before building a new motor --- you should have a pretty strong combo already IMO.

If you set it up right you will love the 400 once you get it in. I have a mild 400 in my 68 that runs in the mid 12s @108mph and is very streetable.

400 block .030,
stock rods with ARP bolts,
flat top pistons, compression 9.8 with 76cc heads
ported stock iron #993 heads with 2.02/1.60, 76cc
.232/.234 @.050 dur cam with .488 lift, hydraulic
team G intake
750dp with proform body
stock HEI ignition
1 3/4 headers

engine pulls extremely hard from 2500 to 6000 and runs best ET shifting at 6300rpm. Idles at 800rpm with 13 vacuum and power brakes work fine. Cam is a little lumpy at idle, so if you want a relativey smooth idle, you might want a little smaller cam for a daily driver.

With your trick flows, I would think you would be able to to run very low 12s or better.

Eric is right about the OD trans. I had a t350 in mine at first, and changed to a 200r4 OD trans. It totally transformed the personality of the car. I will never build another sreet car without an OD trans.

My brother runs a 400 in a 3500lb. chevelle. standard loose bore, old stock chevy angle plug heads, used lunati bracket master 2 cam, 5.7 rods, stock used dished pistons with the top cut off for the 5.7 rod. airgap intake 390 gears and a 2800 stall. A total piece of crap car and it runs 11.70s all day long. He might have 1500.00 in the motor.

Luke805....Ultradyne Hyd F/T`s in our 406' 78 camaro have run very well. These two will work fine:

</font> 288/296 adv.
231/239 @ .050
.485/.507 lift 110 sep

296/304 adv.
239/242 @ .050
.507/.530 lift 108 sep& Rhoades lifters</font>
The first cam put the car 12.20`s @ 112 Mph easy!
Infact the car ran consistant 12.2`s the last time out on 7 cyl`s! Twisted Wedge heads BTW.

The second cam with Dart Pro 1(Conquest) 200cc heads so far with no real track time to speak of has run 11.85 @ 116 Mph

1.6 rockers on the intake.

I`d guess to say, this motor, set up in a light 1st Gen car would run 11.50`s with some minor tweeking.

Also, the car has 3.23 Gears and is shifted 5400-5600 Rpm and a daily driver at that.
