: Set the design: New crate & NOS
Scoop69RS-SS May 8th, 01, 11:03 AM I would be very interested in your opinions on what type Crate motor gets dropped in to the 69 RS-SS. It is currently a 350 and will keep it a small block. The car is a clone so I can do as I please.
With that said, I will lean towards a stock look, meaning I do not want a blower sticking out of the hood. Most anything else is undecided.
My current canidates are the 350/330hp, the 350/350hp and the 383/330hp. I think I would like the 383/330hp as it develops its power down below where the car is driven mostly. My buddy has the 350/350 and frankly it sounds like all hell is breaking loose up around at 5 plus K. The police and everybody else will take full notice of that.
So, I'm think 383 at 330hp and toss a NOS set up at it to bring on another fifty hp at 3rd and 4th.
I will be running slightly over sized tires but for argument sake, consider them a stock size. I am still unsure of the rear end gears at 373's or 330's or someplace in between.
The end goal is to have a strong town driver with legs that will allow a comfortable 65-73mph cruise. Plus the once in a great while dash to 100. Honestly, you can get hurt at those speeds with a car that's over thirty years old.
What do you think?

PS: This is not for street racing nor do I condone such actions.
67stock May 8th, 01, 08:50 PM If it's not for street race then go with the 350. Honestly I'd go for the crate bottom end and buy some good aftermarket heads. As far as noise it's all in what mufflers your running. Ask your buddy what ones hes got chances are they're flowmasters. A 383 I would think would be louder than a 350.
If I was gonna build an engine I'd go with a 400, comps XE 274 or 268 cam (probly the 268), some nice heads alum if I could afford em or wanted em, I'd go with a TPIS miniram EFI, thorley headers, X crossover, some quiet mufflers, griffen radiator, electric rad fan, a richmond 6speed (custom fiberglass console with cup holders), 3.42-3.73 posi, all heavy duty steering components (MOOG) ball joints included, I'd probly also try out a full set of hotchkis springs and front bar, Pozzis vette brakes with deville discs on the back, 16 or 17" rims 50 series tires, and that about covers it. Oh yeah and twin turbos and I might feed em a little n2o but without turbos I wouldn't.
My second choice would be a RamJet 502 with all the other stuff I said excluding the turbos. But only if the ramjet's nice since I haven't seen one run yet.
edit
Honestly I wouldn't feed any motor n2o unless it had forged pistons or I was real careful/thorough setting it up. If I only had the choice of full crates I'd opt for the 350 ramjet or I think it's the zz4? the one with vortec heads. But you could easily get a 383 with 400 horses just not outta the crate cause their mass produced. I would actually rather do it myself so I know it's done right. align bore the block, grind the rings to the right gap not just a throw in set like the crates use. Might cost you a little more but probly well worth it.

camaro79tx May 8th, 01, 09:17 PM my dads 383 sounds sweet with flow masters not real loud either , im not putting down small block chevys but sound similar to a mustang 5.0 but with a better tune not no bogging off the line i dont know if yall noticed but every mustang through 87-93 bogs off the line with some good sticky tires that is if there kinda stock i always have mustangs trying to race me out on the street i run a 14.39 and can still beat all of em
Scoop69RS-SS May 9th, 01, 05:29 AM The comment on the noise is not because of mufflers, my thinking was the 350,330hp, and the 350/350hp both produce their peak horsepower above five thousand RPMs. Any vehicle turning out five grand is going to be making a rucuss<sp?>.
The 383 power curve is down about three to low-mid four thousand. This is the range of normal everyday driving. Here's the major plus for me.
Side by side with my friends, I want them to have to put their foot into it to keep up and wonder why my car seems to pull away from theirs. -- In normal driving --
As I said all along, my car is a clone. That, and I like to have fun, so you can bet that if a stroked 350, (383) was in my car, I would swear to my pals for ever and ever that its a plain ol' 350.
"Maybe your car isn't running right."
All in fun, but I am looking for the right set up. I do not want a wacked out cam as I prefer having nice vacuum for the brakes.
So, thank you guys for your input. With this clarification, think up a storm and spend my money. I guess you could say I am looking for a monster set up that is very, very street-able. Get it?
Thanks again and help me cheese off my best pals!!!
350-330, 350-350, 383-330
Muncie M-21, (don't know the ratios.)
Changing the rear end. Considering:
330 for legs
342? 350?
373's for street. Which?
Rick.

ilbl8 May 9th, 01, 08:54 AM what ever you do use a forged piston with NOS. hypercontic and cast do not last long with NOS normaly.
it has to do with heat and stress that NOS put's on a motor, forged are the strongest, then come's hyperconetic, then cast.
bottledpower May 11th, 01, 06:07 AM you want to pass your friends in everyday driving like they are setting still? add a 150 horse shot of N2O to any good engine http://www.camaros.net/forum/biggrin.gif
