can anybody tell me the the quickest possible procedure for setting the valve lash on a 396 big block?

You need to do this HOT!!!!
The best way to ensure that you are on the base of the lobe..is to turn the motor over till the valve you are working on has it's spring fully compressed by eye observation..THEN you spin the motor around one full time...Now you are at the base circle of the cam for that valve..Now use the feeler gauge for mech cam..or if it is hydraulic cam you now very carefully turn the nut slowly while feeling the push-rod for zero-lash...spinning the push-rod is not always best...a light to see the lifter is helpfull..since you can visually see the oil displace before the pluger starts to move..now give it a 3/4 turn ....and move onto the next valve..
