: Vintage Air IV - interior hose install - 69
tgifford5 Mar 7th, 10, 08:38 AM I have a 69 that I will be installing the VA gen IV system. For those that have used the (4) hose bulkhead. Did you use any of the prebent hoses that came with the kit for installing the unit on the interior of the car to the bulkhead? Do you have any pics of the install on the interior side of or the engine bay of the bulkhead hose hook up?
Vegas69 Mar 7th, 10, 08:49 AM It's a pain in the neck. I ended up running all the hoses around and under the unit. Mine is a little closer to the passenger side due to some other things. Most guys put the bulkhead as close to the kick panel as possible with a vertical bulkhead. I went with a lateral bulkhead because I felt it was the most servicable. I used a 90 degree 10 and straight 6 for AC and 2 45's for the heat.

The Camaro Guy Mar 8th, 10, 04:42 AM After talking with VA and Frank at Prodgy, I ran the hoes (4) through the kick panal and through the round fan hole using the "4 hole piece" from VA that is used on the Chevelles. I ran the 4 hoses from the evaporator to their proper locations without and bulkhead connectors. The more connections you have, it increases the possibility of leaks. The hoses are hidden under the fender with the firewall "smooth". The compressor hose runs along the bottom of the radiator core support and up to the compressor on the drivers side, that way I don't have those hoses running on the top of my Chrome ladden BB. Clean and easy. I used the best hoses and clamps for the installation.
tgifford5 Mar 8th, 10, 08:02 AM Thanks Vegas, the pics are worth a thousand words. Is the hose routing really tight under the dash? Bruce was the routing of the hoses through the kick panel tight? Do you have any pics?
Vegas69 Mar 8th, 10, 09:05 AM It is tight, I installed all the hoses befor mounting it. Then it was faily easy to thread them on. I also considered the way Frank at Prodigy Customs described to Camaro guy. I just like the look of a bulkhead and the oring seals should be reliable. Many ways to skin a cat. I ened up with the 6 AC hose closest to the fender, then 10, then the heater hoses. They are at about 45 degrees and it really worked out perfect.
tgifford5 Mar 8th, 10, 09:33 AM Vegas, is that your heater valve down below your bulkhead? Do you have to drill a hole in the firewall for that?
Vegas69 Mar 8th, 10, 12:52 PM No, I attached it to the unit inside the car.
The Camaro Guy Mar 9th, 10, 04:25 AM Anyway you want it still works. I don't have any pix, will soon.
The Camaro Guy Mar 9th, 10, 04:29 AM Todd, is your Camaro a Black car? Mine is Black with white stripes and white interior, 468 BB 4 SPD. Everything is NOT original except the body! Should be done by the end of summer. . .I hope. Everything takes longer than planned, esspecially when you do everything yourself!!
Vegas69 Mar 9th, 10, 08:49 AM Yep, it's the payback camaro. It's a ton of work...
prostreet69camaro Mar 9th, 10, 10:10 AM Here is the install I did thru the heater hole under the fender. I did cut the hole( behind kick panel) farther up in the interior part so the hoses would be higher and it will be hidden behind the kick panel. The pressure switch and heater control is mounted inside also. This way the wiring will be inside which is a cleaner install.

tgifford5 Mar 9th, 10, 12:25 PM Great pics Mike! That is very helpful for many of us trying to do a clean install. What are the 2 grommeted holes for? Where did you run your drain tube? Thanks both you guys for the pics.
prostreet69camaro Mar 9th, 10, 01:27 PM Ted,
The 2 grommets are for all the wires that go up front. I have 2 on each side. The wires run between the fenders and fenderwells. Then I put the corrigated black tubing over the wires to protect them. Another thing I did was add copper tubing insulation on the AC and Heater core lines between the fender and fenderwell so the braided line would not scratch the paint. I did it on all 4 lines. The drain is drilled into the lip of the firewall. If you run your hand up the floor board where it reaches the firewall there is a area about 1" flat then the firewall goes up. I drilled a hole on that area.
Vegas69 Mar 9th, 10, 02:34 PM Nice install but the Gen IV is way bigger and three of the fittings are on the firewall side of the unit. Pain....

Is Mike's unit different?
Vegas69 Mar 10th, 10, 12:58 AM Not even close to the same...... You need to set it on the bench and get a solid game plan together.
prostreet69camaro Mar 10th, 10, 03:24 AM Mine is a Gen 2. I've had it about 4 years.
Even if the hoses connect to the back it will still go thru the firewall like mine. You just might have to have it laying on the floorboard to connect the hoses. Mine is alot easier because I had my dash cut out for the Marquez Design fiberglass dash.

The only problem I see with this is you will see the hoses from the interior side. We wanted our hoses hidden.
tgifford5 Mar 11th, 10, 09:11 AM Anyone else have pictures of their VA gen IV install?
