If the undercoating is still adhering well, which I imagine it is, yeah, I'd leave it. From what I've seen that stuff is tough and for a driver, serves as an excellant metal protection and sound deadener.

"untouched" ?? probably could use some clean up/ detail work ?... to go along with the new paint, of course:thumbsup::cool:

Very possibly different products used between 69 and 80's. In the late seventies I rustproofed cars with Rusty Jones. I believe a wax based product that self heals when scratched. My 69 had some black asphalt based crap on it as hard as a rock that held moisture under it if loose or chipped. I assess what condition it is in and decide from there. If it's black I would probably remove it.

The other Jeff stole the words right out of my keyboard. When I debated over removing the undercoating on my 67 vert I realized quickly that the undercoating was brittle and alot of areas were already loose with surface rust underneath it. My only fear would be doing all the hard work to detail the undercarriage just to have it flake off in spots. If you can decipher how well the current undercoat is adhered and it appears good, just leave it. :beers:

Yea mine is black too on the 80 model. I bet it is the same stuff used by dealers in 67 also but not positive.

Maybe I need too double check and make sure it is still adhering well at least.

I bought a 72 Challenger NEW and had it ZBART'd which was one of the most advertised Automotive Ani-Rust Treatments back then, with Outlets in every city. Two years later, that Dodge was a Rusted Shell with only the Zbart holding the floor together.

Moisture would trap between the Body and Thick Tar Undercoating and promote Rust. Today ZBart no longer exists but I'm a strong supporter for the Rust Check Product.
