The elusive 11 second time slip was captured today at Atco Raceway in Atco NJ.

My Best pass on the Day was an 11.60 at 117.31 MPH

And my best 60ft....a 1.61!

Running on Mobil 93.

The Changes i made, were locking out the timing at 39 degrees.
Putting on a 700dp with a Proform Body.
And Putting in the line lock and doing a good burnout!

Which BTW, Burn Outs are cool ;)

Very impressive with the .5 second increase. Congrads. Did you do both changes at once and if not do you feel timing increase or carb was the biggest improvement?? So much for the theory of modern combustion chambers and pump gas requiring less timing!!!!!!!!!! Did motor start ok with timing locked? Good job and keep improving.

Congrats! Now that's progress!

How about the complete incrementals?

Aug 22nd, 04, 02:38 PM
Thanks guys,
i'll post the incrementals tonight, as they're on the passager seat right now.

I did all the changes during the week, as i felt they all hinged on one another.

In order to get the carb dialed in, i needed to lock out the timing.

Sounds good Brian, looks like the carb & timing really woke it up,
and with better 60fts you've got some 11.40s in the bag now, not bad at all.
Have fun tuning on it, you should get some low 11s out of it with more
track time and tweaking. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Awesome Times!! What times were you running before?

I may have to try one of those PROFORM main bodies- do you feel it helped significantly? WHat did you have to do to dial it in or was it a bolt on and go deal?

39 degrees of timing! I didn't even know you could go that high without pinging? Gonna try 40 degrees or is that pushing it too much?

Congrats Brian . . . looks like its time for a cage now.

Did they throw you out?

PS. What's up with the timing? Kind of strange sounding that you would need 39* of timing off idle with your heads and flat top piston in a 383. Fill us in when you get a chance.

graemlins/thumbsup.gif Nice! Looks like something was wrong with your old carb.

Lonnie, thanks, and yes the other carb was lean on the secondaries.

Rafel,
thanks for the compliments, i definetly enjoy tuning, its the best part!
Ed thinks with better weather, and without any changes 11.40's are in the bag with better weather.

All Go, the carb is a friend's, with the way the carb is setup now, its extremely close ET wise on his old motor to a HP950 carb, which he also tried.
I didnt have to do much to get it dialed in, i just went through it, replaced the PV and cleaned all the passages before putting it on the motor.

39 degrees isnt alot, i havent tuned the timing for MPH yet, i just set it there and it works out so far.

Thanks Eric,
the main project this winter will be a roll bar.

Nope they didnt throw me out, but Englishtown will.

The locked out timing is NICE, it allowed for me to back off the idle screw in the carb and close up the transistion slot.
Cleaned up the idle alot, and it really felt like a whole new car with 39 degrees ALL the time.

Is there a big advantage to locking out timing? Im not firmiliar with this.......by the way congrats on a great time, and in quite an increase!!

39* isn't a lot. My combo utilizes a pretty efficient combustion chamber and ET's best at 43*.

P.S. Mine's locked out too.

1.61 and 117.3 on the same pass is a high 11.4. You need a traction device.

Eric68
Aug 23rd, 04, 02:27 PM
Garret, 43* is a TON in my book for an SBC  The idea these days is to run real fast burn combustion chambers and minimize the amount of spark advance required. For example . . . the SB2.2 motors are running with rediculously little advance -- like 26-28* total. Generally speaking, the more advance needed the more reverse TQ you are creating and the more power you are giving up. Maybe lots of advance is just a dual plane intake thing . . . LOL heheheheheheee

Anyway, I'm not trying to hijack Brian's thread -- you just touched on a topic I find real interesting.

Again, congrats Brian -- that is enough MPH for 11.4's if you can dead hook it. and an 11.4 will definately get you invited not to come back without a roll bar around here ;)

Eric,
The only way I can explain it is that every combo is different.

Find out what amount of timing it takes to run the highest MPH and go with it. Mine falls off a bunch with only 36*

I find many SBC's with older style combustion chambers need a decent amount of timing.

I made a "best guess estimate" putting my timing at 39 degrees.

Nick, the advantage for locked out timing is that you have the timing All the time, it makes tuning easier for me.
Also if your Launch RPM is lower then where your full timing advance comes in, you'll pick up ET locking out the timing.
Only if you can hook it though.

Lonnie,
I agree i'm looking into different traction devices, but for now, i might just buy a set of traction bars.

I'm sure slappers will work for you. Do your heads have old style chambers? My 20 year old ported bowties like 38.

Brian
I'm sure some slapper bars will work for you just fine.
Seams like when you get to low 1.50s is where the traction problems
start, at least when you have a bunch of torque. ;)
You should be able to hook it with slapper bars and your Koni shocks.

Thanks Red,

for now i'd like to try the slapper bars, but later on i want a more "high tech" solution :D

way to go Brian.....
Don't forget to give S&W a call for the roll bar. If you do it sometime after December, you might just be talking to me? I'm keeping my fingers crossed and kissing up to Don, big time....Maybe I ought to send him some flowers, hummm
What do you think?
Anyways, way to go.

Hopefully i will see you at Etown sometime this season?

On the Roll bar, i'm going to bend up my own from chrome moly, i have a bunch of ideas that i want to try out on it.

I'm guessing 39-40 degrees and up isn't advisable on a sbc running on 93 pump gas tho right?

Congrats!!! I remember my first 11.90 run. Kind of strange but I rate that up there with one of the most enjoyable times I have spent at the track. I did it with a really basic 427 BBC, oval ports, Edelbrock Performer RPM cam, 10.01 compression. I've come a long way since then, but still rate that as one of the best.

Brian,
After seeing your car and tlkin to you the times i have a thing you just said kinda hurt me. I thought u said you were going to BUY a set of slapper bars. After what you have done with your car if you need to buy them were gonna have to have a little talk. lol. We built the ones on my car in about 3 hours with paining them. lol. Easy as cake. I KNOW you can make some.

BTW the BB should be back in in 2 weeks, should be about 11.70`s, gotta slow it down alot cause i should run 50`s at US13!!!!!
