Start to finish it usually takes me 45 minutes to an hour. If I was in a hurry I could probably do it in 30 minutes. The time kind of depends on what obstructions you have around the valve covers that can slow you down when removing them.

Yep thats pretty right for an expeianced mechanic.
An experianced guy can turn over to correct pots without thinking "now which is the next lifter"
And if the cover gaskets are spot glued in place...not catching the cove and gasket when dropping over the rear rockers when replacing.

You only have to turn the engine over once to do all 16 ... :thumbsup:

Turn the engine to the number 1 firing position, adjust;
Exhaust #1, 3, 4, & 8
Intake # 1, 2, 5, & 7

Turn the engine to the number 6 firing position, adjust;
Exhaust # 2, 5, 6, & 7
Intake # 3, 4, 6, and 8

Used to have a sign up on the wall of my shop that read -
1 = E-1348 - I-1257
6 = E-2567 - I-3468
Very few could fiqure it out or asked what it meant ;)

I never did the 2 position adjustment. The duration on my cams never let me do that. I always start with #1 and turn crank in quarters through out firing order and then it's right. 30 minutes at most. I do the same for hyd. cams to. I call it the 100 percent adjustment. IMO

Not replacing gaskets, doing hot with remote button crank and using EOIC.....about half an hour give or take :)
Should take the same for cold settings.

You're right - on 'bigger' cams that is the best method :thumbsup:
But the majority of stuff I normally did was 'smaller' so it saved a boat-load of time!

How long it takes and what is charged to the customer can be two different things.

Let's say "book time" is 2 hours and it takes the tech 45 minutes, that's how a "flat rate" tech makes money. Conversely, if it takes him 3 hours, then he eats the rest.

Thanks guys. First I should have said it is a stock 302 Z/28. I was reading John and Duke's method of 90 degrees before for exhaust and 90 degrees after for intakes. I just wanted an idea of time to see how much it would cost.:beers:

Hell by the time you take the car up book it in , get it done, pick up the car, you will have it done in your backyard.....
And If you dont have the tools, what you would have paid a workshop would pay for the tools.

Your right,but unfortunately my vision has gotten very bad and I can't do it anymore. As a matter of fact my friends are my driver for cruise nights and shows. Gotta keep on truckin though.:beers:

Back in the early 50s there was a young guy who walked to school past our home..he is albino...eventually he left school and got an apprencship in the local workshop...did rather well, topped his class.
Years have piled over, his boss/owner eventually retired several yrs back
The young guy..now not so young briought the bisiness. as an owner operator with a couple mechanics.
To rad oe write, with his glasses on the paper is about 4" from his nose....a side defect of being albino.
When I was growing up there was a cobbler couple doors down from my parants shop...worked on his own, did brillant work..had a white stick....that was the days before disposable shoes and bags, soles where stiched not just glued.

1/4 turn if its a performance cam seeing over 5500 rpms.1/2 turn on stock cams.
