ok, i think i know the answer here but im trying to avoid it. i have a fresh 350 with a edlbrock 600 and the 7101 intake. the motor has a 288 cam in it. in park, fully warmed up it idles at 1300, in drive it idles at 500+/- i want it to be at 1000 - 1100 in park, and 600 - 650 in drive. i have adjusted the carb till im blue in the face and cant achieve this. also, the fumes burn your eyes horribly. anyone here have any feedback?

Couple of things come to mind. Double check your fuel pressure; Edelbrocks like about 5.5-6 psi max, otherwise they run rich. My first guess is that the cam has too much duration for a stock converter, but I don't know the specs on the cam to know for sure.
Is 1300 rpm the lowest it will idle at? That's way high and compounding your in-gear problems. If that's the case look for vacuum leaks. Did you run the #2732 Edelbrock plate between the manifold and carb? This is a very common source of a vacuum leak with that combination.

no plate between the carb and intake. stock mechanical fuel pump, brand new. 1300 is where it wants to idle if i want any kind of idle in drive. if i go below that then the drive idle is 500 or less. at 1300 in park its around 600-650 which is where i like it, but the 1300 in park is way too high. all i have is a stock converter. cam is a general kinetics 288

A "288" duration number is almost meaningless...what is the .050 duration and lobe seperation angle? The way some cam companies rate their cams, 1 companies 288 can be quite radical while anothers is barely above a stock grind. If you don't know the .050 numbers, what is the lift? We might be able to figure pretty close to how much cam you are running. Is it pulling against the brakes at idle? How much idle vaccuum does it pull? What initial timing are you using? I am thinking either not enough convertor, not enough initial timing, a vac leak, or the throttle blades are open too far at idle.

Dropping 800rpm when you put it in gear is a big problem. The fact that it idles at 500 rpm in gear tells me you have a tuning issue and along with your cam and converter being mis-matched you may have other tranny issues to boot!
Tell us as much about your combo as you can. Compression, cam specs converter stall and anything else you can come up with...

Camcojb just made me think of another vacuum leak problem I once had. The original owner installed a 84011 Holley on an Edelbrock Performer RPM intake. The accellerator lever was hitting the intake. As you depressed the accellerator, it would lift the carberator up off the intake. I installed a spacer gasket and fixed the leak. When I removed the carb, you could see where they filed and ground on the manifold trying to fix the problem.
