: 69 Camaro rear drum brakes drag
doctordiode Mar 27th, 10, 07:02 PM I have a 69 camaro with front disc and drums on rear I replaced the master cylinder and rear brake cylinders but now the passenger side rea is very touchy when I apply the brakes it skids the tire it is not locking up but the tire slides on the pavment any ideas of what or why this is happening. I rechecked the rear brake adjustment on both sides and to me it seems to be good. help
Steptoe Mar 27th, 10, 07:35 PM Shoes or drum out of round...
Once you have adjusted the rears up.....put into reverse and do some solid braking so the self adjusters take up any extra slack...note the self adjusters only work in rev..see owner handbook.
doctordiode Mar 28th, 10, 11:20 AM Thank you for the reply. I checked the drum and is ok the shoes look ok. But just in case I swapped the drum with the driver side and still the rear passenger side tire slides on the pavement. as for the adjustment I re-adjusted the as indicated in the repair manual. Help confused
Everett#2390 Mar 28th, 10, 11:43 AM Still might have some air in drvr rear brake line.
Might take pass side off and spray the bejesus out of the shoes and drum with BraKleen, could have some fluid/grease/oil on one of the two parts.
doctordiode Mar 28th, 10, 11:58 AM ok I purged all the air out again out of the system also I jacked the rearend up on the air with both wheels up on the air and turned the wheels to feel the adjustment the driver side turns 3/4 of a turn the passenger side tuns 1 turn. I will clean the driver side because eather is not breaking right or got oil on the pads I do that and let you know how it turns out.
doctordiode Mar 28th, 10, 12:18 PM 0k I re celeaned all brake shoes and drums with break cleaner and still the same problem. What I did now I jacked the car again and had my son push on the brake pedal slightly and the passenger side still feels stronger than the dirvers side so now I don't know if the passenger side is the good one or the driver side because the passenger side tire slides on the pavment. so I had my son push harder on the brake and the passenger side I could not turn the wheel and the driver side I can move it just a little bit so I know there is a problem I just don't kow what it is. Help confused .
Just curious, did this problem exist before the master cylinder and wheel cylinder changes ??
doctordiode Mar 28th, 10, 12:57 PM no it was fine the reason I replaced everything was because I never replaced the wheel cylinders. So I replaced the wheel cylinders and brake shoes. thank you for the reply
Everett#2390 Mar 28th, 10, 06:19 PM Well, you've changed two out of three things, drum, purged more air out of drvr side.
You're next step would be to swap shoes per side.
The slightest fluid on shoes will make them sticky, even skin oil. Handle shoes by the edges, nothing on the friction material.
doctordiode Mar 28th, 10, 07:22 PM OK 1: swapped the drums 2: swapped the wheel cylinder 3: purged the system also checked the lines for blockage and the distribution block on the rearend
tomorrow I'll swapped the shoes I didn't have time today and after all that
the rear passenger wheel still slides on the pavement. help I want to enjoy the car.
HwyStarJoe Mar 29th, 10, 04:06 AM Parking brake dragging on that side?
doctordiode Mar 29th, 10, 06:22 AM no I disconnected the the packing brake cable I was thinking of that as well but that still didn't help.
myty Mar 29th, 10, 06:37 AM You installed the shoes correctly right? The bigger shoe to the rear on both sides.
The shoes have to be installed incorrectly as stated above. Don't laugh, we all done this one time or another.
Steptoe Mar 29th, 10, 12:45 PM I was thinking about the leading edges if the shoes the right way around, and the self adjusting springs /lever the right way around.
Steve69SS396 Mar 29th, 10, 01:36 PM The shoes have to be installed incorrectly as stated above. Don't laugh, we all done this one time or another.
When I first bought my Camaro it stopped fine if you were easy on the brakes but would lock one rear tire if you pressed a little harder. I yanked the drums off and they had the small shoes on one wheel and large shoes on the other one. :clonk:
doctordiode Mar 29th, 10, 07:39 PM OK 1: Found a weak spring on the passage side
2: The passenger side tire was also worn down on the sides it didn't have the same contact surface as the driver side, now both slide on the pavement the car is very heavy on the front because it has a BBC so I don't know what from here should I put an adjustable valve or is it because my brakes a new on the rear and on the front I have disks.

I would suggest at this point start from scratch. Install a complete NEW hardware kit on both sides. Also, how do the brakes feel when you step on them ?? Soft, spongy, hard, normal???
zman1969 Mar 30th, 10, 09:24 AM you say both slide on the pavement - is this when pushing the veh or when you drive it? when the rear is jacked up do the tires rotate freely? I had an issue on my 69 a long time ago-while going thru a parking lot the L/R tire would lock up and slide while litely braking was grease had gotten on the shoes cleaned and were fine. as stated above you cleaned and swapped from side to side. if the tires dont rotate freely does cracking open the bleeder release any pressure and allow the tires to turn? having missmatched shoes -2 primary on one side and both secandary shoes on other can do weird stuff, need to see if this is a hydraulic issue or a friction issue. Ive had so many weird issues over the years on various cars you cant imagine.... if you want PM me with your phone number and I can try to help out.
Steptoe Mar 30th, 10, 12:25 PM Like above we had a HQ Holden...basically same set up as the 1st gen camaro...down to MC wheel bearings discs, stub axles are all interchangeable..
A tr or so before hand he had changed the MC and shortened the pin...BUT the rear pads where getting rather worn down at the time...
Put the new shoes in and there wasnt enough plat in the pin..
Now in therory that shouldnt matter, cause new pads are just like adjusting old ones up.
doctordiode Mar 30th, 10, 08:07 PM OK Thank you all for the help and the fast replies. OK as for the brake pedal it feels hard and also I don't have much travel on the pedal I don't know if that is normal. Because I don't know how much travel I should have. Also as for the sliding on the pavement the rear wheels slide when I'm driving and do a hard stop.
Everett#2390 Mar 31st, 10, 02:33 AM Pedal travel according to the AIM (Assembly Instruction Manual) states after three successive pumps, 1.75 inches of travel.
If both rear tires are sliding when shoes are cold, normal. When they are warmed up, they become less sticky.
Sauron67MM Mar 31st, 10, 03:57 AM OK 1: Found a weak spring on the passage side
2: The passenger side tire was also worn down on the sides it didn't have the same contact surface as the driver side, now both slide on the pavement the car is very heavy on the front because it has a BBC so I don't know what from here should I put an adjustable valve or is it because my brakes a new on the rear and on the front I have disks.
No mention of the rear flexible brake hose being replaced or not or it's age. If it is collapsed inside it will cause the rears to hold pressure.
