: Did Z28 first gens come with 302 only?
apyah Apr 7th, 10, 04:47 PM Did z28 first gens come with 302 only? Somebody told me you could order different engine in them, I never heard that. I thought the cubic inch was for the trams am cars and was the reason they made the 302. just curious thank you Allen
mb302rs Apr 7th, 10, 04:49 PM 302 only. Your somebody is misinformed:D
Z10396 Apr 7th, 10, 05:35 PM You're thinking is correct in concerns to the displacement and Trans Am Series relationship.

Steiner Apr 7th, 10, 06:59 PM Yep, 302 only. The actual engines used for the race series were knocked out to the 305 limit though.
Camarofrom69 Apr 8th, 10, 10:46 AM Also about the 302 : is it true they made about 400hp ?

What was their max rpm ? 6000 ?

I wasn't kidding about the 7K rpm :)
From CRG http://www.camaros.org/interior.shtml#69Z28Tach
69 Z28 Tachometers
1969 Z28 used three tachometers, in chronological production order:
•6000 rpm redline with 7000 rpm maximum (early-mid)
•6000 rpm redline with 8000 rpm maximum (mid-late)
•6500 rpm redline with 8000 rpm maximum (very late)

Not "as-installed"; 325-340 hp is more like it. They can be built up to 450+ hp for stock class drag racing but one of those won't last 100 miles on the street.
Camarofrom69 Apr 8th, 10, 02:17 PM I see, it is a very intresting engine that has hidden powers in the high rpms :D
69z28boy Apr 8th, 10, 05:30 PM most people who dyno them find that they are good for about 350-360 HP at the clutch with headers, and a fairly stock but blueprinted build..
meaning the 30-30 cam, true 11 to 1 HP.. 1 3/4 headers. (i'm sure 1 5/8 would be ok as well)
i know of a handful of people that have achieved 420 or so HP using the 1st design Offroad Camshaft, in an otherwise stock engine.. (with headers)
and of course these numbers are above 6500 rpm. LOL
my all stock (except headers) pulled 301 rwhp without any tuning... in fact, the car wasn't even in top shape when it pulled those numbers.

Elias my 11:1 stock 302s never had any problems reving to 8000 and beyond on a regular basis without ever hurting one. My experience is with stock builds they'll rev easily to 8K. I know guys including my brother whose 302 were built for drag racing and those motors saw much higher rpm, of course not with stock internals.

I didn't knew that !
I always thought that V8's couldn't rev as high as for example Ferrari's V12's..
Can BB rev as high as the 302 ?
Elias
KevinW Apr 9th, 10, 09:47 AM solid lifter 427's can rev! 454, not so much. The shorter the crank throw, the more it likes to rev. But valve train limits revs too.

A friend of mine runs his 588 BBC up to 8,800.
novaderrik Apr 10th, 10, 01:07 AM but what about all those 454/TH350/10 bolt 69 Z's with 4 wheel manual drum brakes that had air conditioning?
i've seen them at car shows, so they must be real...

That has to sound cool! :D I used to turn the 396 in the Chevelle I used to have to 7200 on the street. It liked to rev.

Dwight's Z/28 Apr 10th, 10, 04:23 PM Although I've never had my 302 dyno'd, I would say that it's pushing at least 300hp and I've had it up to 8K rpm's on two occasions.... Nowaday's I limit it to 6,000 rpm's which is impressive unto itself. IMHO.
