Im still looking at different cams for my 396. 1 just scoped out isky and they have a
290/290 250/250 @.05 with .560 lift on a 108 LSA.
It has an overlap of 74. Is this too rough for the street. Will this much overlap idle about 800-1000 RPM. The 294S has about the same amount or overlap, could you guys with the 294S "deal with it" as a fun/ weekend/ cruise car? This is for a BBC, do they in general like alot of overlap/ tight LSA, or a wider milder 112LSA. I want the car sound close to the origanal L78 cam, will this get me in the ball park??? Thanks!!

Moe,
The old L-78 cam is 242/242, 114/108, .520"/.520" gross lift so if you want your motor to sound like it, then you need something along these lines, plus the recommended 11 to 1 CR. it needs to really run good..

Go over to Team Chevelle and read up on the UDHarold posts and what the guy's think of his great line of BB Ultradyne solid lifter cams. I bet you will find just what you want, make more power and be able to run it on pump gas too boot!!! pdq67

In a small block the 294s is about "the max" for my tastes. It idles pretty rough at 850 RPM in gear. Works with power brakes after I added a vac can.

Not sure about how it would compare to the L78 cam, but PDQ is right make sure you have the compression to go with the big cam.

I have the isky z-77 cam in my 468 which is 264 @.05 and .590 lift with 108 lsa and i dont feel that it is all that hard to live with on the street at all. it idols at about 750-800 rpm in gear and is pretty sort of (21* of initial advance really smooths things out) but it still responds pretty well. i mean i can floor it at about 3000 and it won't stumble a bit even though isky says the rpm range is 4000-7500, i shift at 6600. I think that the smaller cam in your 396 would behave much the same.
