My combo is already shown in "Critique my Combo" and I hope to continue getting more help. However my brother is about to build a BBC for his 81 camaro. He has always built 406 SBC. He would like to go with a 454 this time. So I would like combo ideas for him. Some information:
It will be a street car with some weekend racing. Need to run pump gas (can mix during racing). The car will have a 350 turbo auto trans. He is running a 342 gear now but he can change it. His car weighs 3480 lbs with him in it and the 406sbc. He wants to run 6.90's on motor in the 1/8 mile. Dont have alot of money so be easy on the budget. Therefore would like to use cheaper GM heads like I did. He does not have any parts at this time considering he has always built SBC. So describe all parts you think would get him his goal. Once he has reached his goal, he may add a 125 hp NOS kit for the fun of it.

You will find a lot of combo's on chevelles.com, many of those guys (including myself) have big blocks. The most popular combo's I see are a 454 block, if you have the cash a 4.25 stroke crank would make it a 496 (I believe) and make massive amounts of tire smoking torque! I would go with large oval port heads as opposed to rect. port unless this is an all out race car. Even then there are a lot of people in the 12, 11 even 10 second 1/4 mile range with ovals. I have open chambers but would suggest closed chambers since the combustion chambers sizes are smaller and you will have an easier time getting the compression high. Plus there's that whole flame travel over flat tops is better than traveling over large domes argument. I'm sure there's a ton of people who disagree with me, this is just my opinion, so it's worth what you paid for it, nothing. Good luck on your build up! graemlins/thumbsup.gif

I gotta say that 6.90 in the 1/8 would be pretty easy with a pump gas 406,
so he could just work on what he has and get it tuned/tweaked to run it.
(We've got a pump gas 406 that runs 6.30s on motor and 5.70s on spray = 8.90s)
Dont overlook the SB. graemlins/thumbsup.gif
If not, then look a Slowazzbu's combo, or Eds combo. If you only want high 10s
then just build a stock, cheap short block, throw some ovalports with bigger valves
at it, get a cam with 240-250 duration, decent intake and exhaust - and your there.

hey 502 , think we could get that kinda hp out of a set of factory 041 heads.

Yea, its do-able with 041, since it only takes around 500HP to push a 3500lbs
car to a 10.90, but they will have to be ported. But it would be much easier with
some aftermarket heads.
