Just got the car back from the paint shop. Called the Glass shop to install the new front windheild. The said make sure the screws for the molding clips are installed first. My question is what size screws do I use and how deep do you screw them into the windsheild frame?

I'll assume they are using urethane. Make sure they apply the urethane primer on the glass with a perfectly consistent line and minimal coverage to hide the bead laid. My shop has been doing it correctly for many years. I've seen some real butchery in glass installations.

Second what Scott said on the primer and bead. Try a test fit before the primer and urethane. You only get one shot and you don't want to be moving it around after it is in place. good luck.

I used pop rivets with some RTV on them before you put them in.I would recomend if using pop rivets to put a thin washer behind the clip because it s to tight with out.I dont trust the screws especialy if there is body filler in the window channel...

Dave,

I hate to say it but they dont recommend RTV to be used around the glass area. It produces rust. But I know your car doesnt see alot of water.

I was told this by my window guy now that you say this and he put some of the urithane on the heads of the rivets so I guess it would be better to use urithane or some non silacone product....

If you have the molding clips place one in the channel and you'll see were to drill

Use the clip as a template and go around the opening where they belong

I am actually just looking for the specs. all the holes are there. I just need to know what size screw and how deep to screw them in?

You do not need to have the lower windshield molding clips installed for the window to be installed. You will need the window stop brackets installed to support the window.

I installed my molding clips after the window installation as I put in a new dash and had no reference point to go off of to install them.

With screws MAKE SURE you put the screws in first, trying to install screws after glass,
you will chip and likely crack the windshield. If a coupe put the clips in any time wou like.

The screw in stud's depth is predetermined by it's shoulder. Just bottom out the screw.

I used stainless steel screws in mine, I think about a size 6, and about .5 inch long. Ace hardware has a good supply of screws, I actually re-used SS screws out of a hot water solar panel.

Trim screws in first before the windshield is set. Since you are using urethane you do not need the two lower clips on the bottom of the windshield unless you want to drill unnecessary holes. The urethane will hold the windshield in place without the clips. Make sure you dry fit the windshield with the clips and molding. Since it is a conv the trim screws are just that screws and not rivits like the coupes. Be careful. When I did my' 67 the holes were bigger than the trim screw kits from Ricks. I used stainless screws to secure clips and made sure that the fit was tight before we urethaned the windshield. Do not use Zinc screws due to them being weak and rusting issues. Again you want to set all the screws before you set windshield. Good luck

I use Auveco trim screws you can buy them at any parts store. Here is the part number and Item description (Auveco #671 5-20 x 3/8" phillips flat head sheet metal screws. Used for attaching moulding clips.) They come in a box of 100 but I paid $7 for the last box I bought.
