Building a Pro Street 327, It will be close to our race 327 so that if we need a second engine it is very similar. It is a budget engine, nothing amazing to speak of, just an old school engine

Here is the cars combo, 1970 Chevelle @ ~3700-3750 race weight all steel with factory interior and factory SS shifter modified to use reverse valve body transbrake, TH400 with 6200rpm stall, 12 bolt with 5.38 Richmond Pro Gears

Would you rather see combo #1 kicking it way old school, our combo #2? Not trying to put anything else on it, I want to see what some people want to see

If we do combo #1 it will be,
-GM 010/020 4 bolt main block, ARP studs, filled with Hardblok, decked and bored with modified oiling
-Ohio Crankshaft 4340 3.25" stroke
-6.125" Rods
-Probe Industries "Sportsman Race Series" pistons, 13:1 compression in the engine
-1/16" rings
-King Bearings
-Solid Roller 317/330 @.020" 283/291 @.050" .725"/.632" with 1.6/1.5 rockers 106 lobe seperation angle
-Sportsman II Heads (Old School Heads) with 2.055"/1.6" valves, with minor bowl port and minor port clean up with minor exhaust polish
-Probe Industries Shaft Mount Rockers 1.6/1.5
-3/8" pushrods
-1.55" springs with Titanium Retainers

OR Should we do Combo #2. The only differene in combo #2 would be the heads and camshaft. Combo #2 would use the following "as cast" heads and the following camshaft
- EQ 220cc As Cast Heads 2.02"/1.6"
- Solid Roller 307/317 @.020" 278/284 @.050" 201/197 @.200" .726"/.660" with 1.6/1.5 rockers 106 lobe seperation

Now I will not go Dart, AFR, Brodix, Pro-Filer etc on this engine. It is one of the two combo's above. What would everyone find interesting?

In My Opinion I think it would be interesting to show what Sportsman II Heads can do with a simple clean up being they are "Old School" heads. As I said the work to the Sportsman II's would be mild, just clean up the runners then roughen them up a bit, port the bowls, polish the exhaust runners and do the valve job. I think it would be interesting because everyone slams the head as not being good enough by today standards but the head has been out since 1987

Please give me your opinions,,,, :beers:

Man,both cams are kinda big.I like the .700" lift, but I would notch the bores a bit on your combo and run a gasket for a 4.150 bore.I would have went with something in the low to mid 270's at .050.Your looking at a combo that will need to be shifted at close to 9000 rpm in a heavy car with an automatic and need at least 6000 rpm stall. Are you trying to get the required intake closing timing with the short centerline by adding duration on the intake side? With the high rod ratio I would have went conservitive on the intake closing myself.Other then that,a set of cleaned up sportsman 2's is right for the 331.You could gasket match them and the intake to a 1205 gasket.I have tried the 1206 with them,it works if you do the intake properly to that gasket and bellmouth the head ports out to it,you will get into trouble if you try and go all the way into the port with the older sportsmans and that gasket, but the ports would end up at about 220cc.I would just stay with the 1205 gasket though.A lot less work anad no loss in power.
You didn't mention intakes. In your case,a Super Victor would be right on with a cam in the mid 270's,it is just small enuff that it will not be much bigger then a 1205 gasket out of the box.I wouldnt port it unless you find a mismatch. If you were going old school,a tunnel ram would work well. You would actually get a little more area under the curve with a tunnel ram.It might help your heavy car get down the track.
Thats all I got for your combo.

Cam wont change :)

We have tested several cams in 327's, we have ET'd faster with the larger cams. We have been 260/268, 268/276 and so on

Remember just because it is 283/291 it is not 281/291 like most people are used too due to the tight LC

We run high duration and tight LC to get the lift HIGH at TDC, we have always ET'd faster like this

The 283/291 is one of the best automatic 331 cams out, however we will be 337
