Well, I debated on whether I should buy a new set of heads for my 427 or see if I could get my 10 year old AFR210's to flow well enough. For new heads I had looked at the AFR235's and All Pro 245's. The All Pro's are probably the best 23 degree head available but they are a little pricey.

The new motor is being built by S&S in San Leandro so I asked them who I should talk to about port work. They use Angie at Dave's Machine in Newark. Anyway, I figured I would try to have my old heads ported and if they could get them to flow close to the new heads I would go ahead and use them. Since this is just a street car that I take to the track and race my buddies with I hated to spend $4,000 on a set of heads. :clonk:

I just picked up the heads today and they were able to get them close to what the AFR 235's flow. I've got the flow sheet and some pics of the heads that I thought I would share. Sorry for the cell phone pics, my wife has the camera and is out of town visiting a sick friend. The heads still need to be re-surfaced and assembled.

I'll be taking all the parts to the machine shop in the next week or so and I will have to take some good pics of all the parts and start a thread about the build. :beers:

What happened to the engine? Didn't you just build the SBC 427 within the last year? Maybe I missed something.

S&S has a very good reputation, I'm sure you will be happy with the work. The heads look nice as well.

No, I've been gathering parts for the last year. If I couldn't get my old heads to work I was going to buy a new set. If this thing had been running you'd have seen me out at Sac trying to tear the back bumper off! :beers:

These heads look good. How do you know they wont work? Need build the motor you want with these heads then put it on a dyno. That will tell the story. Besides, this is a street car?

What did they charge you? I'm looking to either have it done, or do it myself.

What do you think your hp gain will be with the heads being ported?

x2...I want to get my older AFR 195's done if the price is right.

No, these heads will work now. I figured I would at least need about 310cfm peak at .600-.700 lift. These heads now flow 300 at only .500 lift with a peak of 321 at .700. :beers:

Ok Steve, I just remember a dyno run and coated pistons or something like that. I thought that was the new engine.

I'm sure this thing will be a beast. I know what you went through trying to decide on what to do with the heads. I think you made the right choice.

That's understandable. I did have a new motor in '08 but it was the 357 and it did have coated pistons. :beers:

Before they were ported they may have made 650HP. Now they should make about 700HP.

When I purchased my heads back in 2000 they were supposed to flow in the 280's on the intake. The cost of the port and flow work was a little over $1,000.

.gearhead.

Those are respectable numbers. I faced the same dilemma last year and decided to get my 10 yr old Track 1's done. They flow 318 @ .700. Poor in comparison to the top of the line 23* heads out thesedays but respectable nonetheless. Long live old school.

Jim - That's exactly the way I feel. I knew that as they came from AFR 10 years ago they would be too small for my 427. Now they flow decent numbers. Not great but should be good enough for what I'm doing. :beers:

Wow I was thinking about the 357, I can't believe it was in 2008, time flies. I'm sure your new mill will be a beast.

Not bad... the AFR 235's have the 60-40 valve spacing to open up the pinch a bit. How big did your intake runners end up at to achieve that flow?

Don't know what cc's the ports ended up at. They did a lot of work in the bowl and seat area and then matched the ports to a Fel Pro 1206 gasket. I would guess that they may be between 215 and 220 cc's now.

Thanks

Steve, didn't you lose an engine a while back? The 357?

Yep, I ventilated a couple of pistons on the old 357! :o

The 427 will be done soon. :beers:
