View Full Version : How about this 327????
70chevyz28 Oct 22nd, 03, 03:24 PM HEy guys I'm new here.ANd I getting a new 70 1/2 camaro z/28 from my uncle and I will be a strip/street car but mostly strip used. I got a 327 motor that my dad ran which was bored .060 over with the specail 300hp heads it been sitting for a good 17 years but there no water in the blockcause we got it covered. I was wondering if I rebuilt it with a race cams and all the goodies would it still have enough cylinder walls to handle at least 350hp and its out of a 60's truck!
PLZ REPLY BACK WHAT YOU THINK!
THANKS,
MATT!
P>s- still in high school and taking auto classes
Eric68 Oct 22nd, 03, 04:13 PM Matt,
Welcome to our site. This is a really good place to get info. I started working on cars when I was in high school too.
Anyway, its going to be hard to do a really good rebuild on your 327 since it is already bored .060 over (that's max), but if it was stored properly it may not need it.
I would at least replace all the seals and gaskets and inspect everything you can get at for rust or damage. It would be a good idea to prime the oil system with a drill and priming tool if you know somebody that has one. Then try squirting some oil into the cylinders and turning it over by hand (like with a breaker bar on the vib dampener bolt) until it feels like its rotating freely.
At this point you could probably put new plugs, wires, points, condenser, cap, rotor, etc in the ignition system and fire it up. It will smoke at first from all the oil in the cylinders, but should stop. Hopefully the old motor is still good.
Anyway, good luck - sorry for rambling.
pdq67 Oct 22nd, 03, 04:38 PM Do no more then a shade-tree dingle-berry hone job on her, put her back together with whatever you want to put in her and run it like you stole it!!
Been there, done that!! pdq67
boodlefoof Oct 23rd, 03, 03:30 AM I think Pdq meant dingle-ball hone job... not dingle-berry...
I think a dingle-berry hone job would just get things messier... :D
Ditto with what was said above.
Also, you only need one cam for these old engines. graemlins/thumbsup.gif
This is a great place to learn. I started working on my Camaro in high school, and this site has been a very valuable resource to me.
Everett#2390 Oct 23rd, 03, 08:18 AM Apparently, us Midwesterners, pdq & I (being from Iowa & Illinois), were taught different or read from a different book. I, too, remember the hone being called "dingle-berry." Anyway, Matt, do as others suggest here, replace seals, ignition parts, oil and filter and let it rip.
With the block bored .060 over, its at its limits. Watch the engine temperature, might run alittle warm, being the cyl walls are thinner.
Welcome to the Club, I (We) hope you'll enjoy your stay here.

If you have an Auto Zone near by you can get an oil primer with their lone a tool program.
