I'm thinking about swapping my Hyd. Comp High Energy 268 (lift .454) for a Comp. Magnum Solid 270 (lift .468). Will the springs that I am currently using with the 268 hyd Cam work with the mechanical cam? Or do solid lifter cams always require a different type of spring?
Thanks, Rich

Check cam company for recommended specs for springs for the solid cam you are looking at - then you can compare the closed and open spring pressures to see if your present ones will work
its all about following the cam manufacturers recomendation for the pressure or spring rate for the profile of the cam i.e lift duration lobe lift etc. - not really the type of cam
off the top of my head - it doesn't seem like much difference in the cams overall lift - more importantly - are your springs reasonably new - if they are tired - you should swap anyway for overall performance

Comp Cams recommends the 980-16 for the 268H cam and the 981-16 springs for the 270s cam. You're better off using what they recommend IMO, you might want to give Comp Cams a call just to make sure.

IMHO. A solid cam is stiffer then a hydraulic cam b/c it needs more seat pressure to hold it to the cam. And if you want to run more on a hydraulic cam, you generally run the risk of collapsing a lifter!
Solids generally are more aggressive in lift "speed", (i.e., lifter acelleration rate), and again you need a stiffer spring. Same thing over the top of the lobe b/c it being more aggressive needs more open pressure! Then add in that alotta solid cams are fairly high lift.
There is a bunch more to this, but it's good enough for me. Do like the guy's say and ask the cam manufacturer. pdq67

If you are running the Comp Cams recommended spring, you will be fine. I am looking in my Comp Cams book now, and they say they take the same valve spring. It looks like all you need to do is change the cam and lifters. Good luck!!! Give Comp Cams a call at 1-800-999-0853 and ask them for a catalog, it is free.
