Can I use the same starter when swaping from auto to 4 speed?? The flexplate and flywheel both have 168 teeth. Thanks.

Hey Donny, I can visualize your progress based on the questions you post and you are not far behind me.
I also changed to a 4 speed from auto. I thought I could use the same starter so I went through it and when I went to mount it, discovered that it almost fit but could tell it just wasnt right. A little digging and I found out the nose of the auto starter is a little different than the 4 speeds ( looks like the 4 speed starter nose is slightly longer and narrower than the auto. Remember my set up is for a BB and I'm not sure about the SB's) so I went with an aftermarket gear reduction starter. It works great and I'm glad I didnt stay with the stock set-up. It's smaller (allows more room between engine and Header) spins the motor quickly, and fit right the first time. You might have to shim it to get the fit just right but mine bolted right in.

Hey Louie, thanks for answering. I thought they were different. After looking at some catalogs I thought it may work. Some catalogs listed the same numbers for auto/ 4 speed. Thanks again.

They aren't different starters.

A 168 tooth flywheel, is a 168 tooth flywheel (stick or auto) and takes the same starter. Same goes for the 151.

Get one of the modern Delco MagnaQuench 168 tooth starters and you won't have to wear out your arm bolting the starter in place.

^^^^^ what he said

GM starters are usually interchangable for manual or auto
Fords almost never are

I've now purchased three of the Delco small permanent magnet gear reduction starters from DB Electrical. They weigh a third of what a stock one weighs at only 7.5 lbs and will turn up to an 18:1 motor while drawing less current than a stock one. One was for a Ford and one each 153 and 168 for a Chevrolet. Neither of the Chevy ones had to be shimmed. It's good to check though before you get the engine in the car. You can use a battery charger or battery and just tap the solenoid post to drive out the gear.

As far as I'm concerned, they can't be beat at $53 for the 168 tooth model.

Just an update for everyone. As mentioned above by Louie, The automatic starter will NOT fit into the flywheel (4 speed) inspection cover. The flexplate (automatic) and flywheel inspection cover openings for the starter are different. The 4 speed covers have a smaller opening for the starter nose.

I got one fomr db electrical also...no problems at all!

If the flywheel is the same numbe ro teeth, the "auto" starter should work just fine...as far as I know, ther eis no difference in maunal or auto for the starter...

No good Keith. My auto starter will not fit into the 4 speed inspection cover. The nose is to big. I just ordered the starter you recommended.

inteersting...I had not ever heard of that before...

was your atrter a GM or aftermarket...these are good things to know to help other folks troubleshoot as well.

You will be happy with the DB electrical starter (and you can't beat th eprice)...I did an auto to manual conversion last year and it worked very well (althought he only reason I bought a new starter was because the old one would not start hot--not due to a fitment issue)...

It is an AC Delco unit that I purchased from a Camaro parts supplier. Do you have the 4 speed inspection cover on?? I noticed in the picture the starter was installed, can't see the inspection cover though.

If you're talking about my pic, yes the inspection cover is installed. However, it's the reproduction piece and the hole wasn't exactly lined up but was a little high of where it should've been. I had to just hit it with a Dremel a little on the bottom edge of the hole.

Gen III engines already use a small permanent magnet gear reduction starter similar to these. One of these will not work however.
