Hey mike ,hows it goin in rose hill?I was raised near waxhaw NC and done some cable tv work in rose hill alot of years ago, been in germany 17 years now.Any way I have fairly much the same set-up but use the 70cc rpm aluminum heads and the 280 magnum cam.It works well and pulls my s10 real good.I think I would stay with the larger cam to bleed off some cyl.pressure with those iron heads.Dont lean it out to much and watch your timing and you should be OK.Good luck

thanks richard, things are good in rose hill if we can get this project back together. hope we can finish up by spring. we were leading toward the 280 but were wondering about idle range with the automatic. thanks again. duplin county is about the same as it was 10 years ago.

Alhough I have 9.5:1 TRW's in a 406SBC,I run the CC 280H. Car runs great, pulls hard from idle to 6000rpm,and I have a 2200 stall in a TH350.No problems with power brakes, nice lope, and power on tap.Sh#tty 2.73's hold it back, but thats another story. IMO, its a good all around cam for street/strip use, or the weekend cruise ins.

With 10.5:1 and iron heads you might run into a little trouble with detonation. You COULD run a bigger cam to bleed off cylinder pressure, but then you'll need a higher than stock stall converter to get it out of the hole.
IMO the Comp 280H or Comp 282s would be a good choice if your static compression ratio was closer to 9.5:1. With a 10.5:1 static compression ratio and a 280H cam your Dynamic compression ratio (takes into account cam timing) is 8.4:1. This is way too much for iron heads with the old Camel hump bathtub style combustion chamber.
Unfortunately you'll need a cam with duration more in the range of 292* (like the Comp 292H). But then your RPM range is now up to the 3000 - 6500 RPM band. Solid lifters perform much better above 6000 RPM so the solid lifter equivalent to the 292H is the way to go (Comp Cams 294s is the solid version). You would also need a 3000 RPM or better stall to make this combo work. I run this cam in my 11:1 388 cid motor and like it so far but I am running a 3000-3500 stall and it idles rough at 900 RPM in gear.
IMO the best thing to do would be to get some aftermarket aluminum heads with 72cc chambers (drops compression ratio to 9.8:1 and DCR to 8.0:1) and run a cam with advertised duration in the 275-280* range. then you could run midgrade pump gas and have lots of low end grunt for street cruising. And best of all IMO the aftermarket heads can make like 50 HP more than old GM castings.
