: Should I keep these headers for my 355??

I purchased a 69 camaro that came with some new Hooker Super Comps with the 1 3/4 primarys. I feel like these are a little big for my combo but I already have these and they are way expensive. Here is my combo.

355
AFR 195's
286/490 comp hyd 236 at .050
650 dp
RPM air gap
1.52 comp rollers
10 to comp ratio
700r4 with 3000 stall
4.10 gears

I saw that right now I can purchase some headman elite series headers that are coated for 259 and thats without the 10 percent discount. Later I plan on going with either a 383 or 406 so I wasnt sure if I should just compromise my current set up so I wont have to do the exhaust twice. Tell me what you guys think...

the hookers should be fine for your current and future setup imho

Your 1-3/4" headers are perfect. Dave Visard recommends 1-3/4" headers for small blocks of at least 375 HP. You should be at least that even if you do not swap cams.

Why does it seem like all the 1 5/8 Headers they use in testes in CHP look to be better than 1 3/4"? And they are using them on 383's and 406's.
I dont want to kill the mid range torque. Should I go with 3" exhaust then as well?

The 1-5/8" headers might make a little more TQ down low, but with 4.11 gears I doubt you would notice. The 1-3/4 headers will make more HP on top end.

Don't know why the mags get the results they do, but I bet for every article where the 1-/58 header wins out I bet there's another where the 1-3/4 tubes win. I'd believe what Visard has to say over the mags any day of the week. In fact he just wrote an article for one of the mags this months that restates the same thing about larger tubes.

Its pretty well accepted that a good 2-1/2 dual exhaust system is good for up to 500 HP. I run 2-1/2" on my 383 and it pulls good to 6600 RPM. A 3" system would WORK just fine, BUT I think they are a LOT harder to keep the sound level down to where a street car should be (ie: tickets).

Thanks Eric, I will see what it would cost to have these suckers coated and if its reasonable I will keep the Hookers. I think I will also go with the XS282s. Sounds like a means little cam!
Also for exhaust I will most likely run the 2.5 DR gas x pipe with some 2 chamber delta flows.

2.5" deltas and X is the way to go, but my 68 is kinda quiet

I do not and can not recommend jet hot coatings, the headers on my 94 are looking crappy (as are those of all my friends w/ the jet hot coated hooker long tubes)

sounds like a fun 69!

6d9 - I have the same combo as you have except I am running an XE274 cam. I totally agree with Eric, would not change them.

I am installing an X pipe tomorrow. 3" from the collectors into the X, 2.5" outof the X. I am running Flowmaster 40 series.

Fast, you say your car is quiet - what is your set up?

Well guys I called a few places about coating the headers and they want between 250 and 275 to coat plus shipping. That is just too much money for when I can sell them for 250 and buy some brand new coated 1 5/8's for 250! So it looks like I will just sell them to pay for the new set. I like the Headman elite series with 14 guage tubes and 3/8" flange. Nice and stout. Plus you can get them with the 10 percent discount for 234 coated!
I still plan to run the Dr gas X pipe and 2 chamber delta flows.
