I've used it before but can't get it to work now.

Lenvo Thinkpad R61 Laptop

I launch the sound Recorder
Hit the Record button
It appears to record
As soon as I hit the Stop function the following dialog appears:

"Not enough memory available to complete this operation. Quit one or more applications to increase avaialble memory, then try again."

I rebooted and launched this app without launching anything else... same results. I opened Task Manager and there are no other apps running. The CPU usage is at abot 3% - 4%. These are the processes are running (sorted from highest demand to lowest):

I don't really know what these processes are and which ones I can safely eliminate, and I don't know if this is the real problem anyway    - All I know is that I have used this feature in the past (though it's been a while) and I don't remember seeing this error message. Anyone have any clues? I don't have an external mic, though I do have an input for one. I just want to record some sound files from an external (static) audio source, etc.

Open Sound Recorder, click on File, then Properties. You should see Audio Format: PCM and a number in kHz. I think the default setting is 22,050 kHz, 16 Bit, Mono. To change this setting click the down arrow under Choose from: and click on Recording formats then click on Convert Now. Under Attributes: choose a lower kHz and or Bit setting then was listed under Audio Format: but leave the format set to PCM. See if that works.

Kalif I cant help on the recorder since Ive never used mine but your list of processes is HUGE. You have way to many programs running in the background. Need to clean out stuff from your 'start up' folder or something. Maybe other techy gurus can advise better on that too. :)

Well I fixed the Sound Recorder problem... found a site that said it's "Yetta" --- Yet another Microsoft issue. It seems that if you have TOO MUCH RAM (over 2 Gigs) it will cause problems with Sound Recorder. While it makes absolutely no sense to me, I guess if it's on Microsoft's website it is probably correct.

So, my fix was... I downloaded a free program called Audacity... it has way more functionality and it doesn't care how much RAM I have.

I don't know how to clean out my processes, but I agree... I don't know how many there should be there but, as a novice, it just looks way too big. I know my laptop has slowed down quite a bit over the last few months, so if anyone has suggestions on what to get rid of and how to do it, I'm ready to start cleaning.
