: base 327 performance questions
nantuckett 67 Jul 20th, 02, 03:05 PM I've got a 327/210 powerglide. I think the heads are 184-150's. Would like to keep it looking stock, but would like some extra h.p. Could anyone recommend a manifold/carb setup and a camshaft? I've considered a Performer manifold (painted chevy orange) and an Edelbrock 600cfm. Help??
zuma Jul 20th, 02, 03:45 PM Get the eldebrock performer cam along with the intake and carb, (It comes as a package) add peformance exhaust, and a shift kit for the tranny, K& N filter, that will keep the car looking stock and add a little HP for somewhat low dollars...anyone else?

Dans67 Jul 21st, 02, 12:16 AM I would think about changing the heads if you want any real performance. Those heads are no good for making power, and would be easily replaced by a set of vortecs, or equivilant.

boodlefoof Jul 21st, 02, 05:46 AM My car originally had the same combo as you. The first mod I did was to ditch the old two barrell carb and put on a performer intake and 600cfm carb. There was a noticable difference, and later I found an article in a magazine that did the same swap on the same LF7 engine that you are talking about. Their results showed 20 more horses and 20 more ft. lbs. of torque at the rear wheels. Not too shabby.
I also agree with the responses about a cam change (the Performer cam would probably be a good choice for your combo) and possibly a cylinder head change.
The heads you have use tiny 1.72'' intake valves and tiny runners... something like 140cc. While they flow pretty well considering... they won't support very high horsepower levels.
If you want to get new cylinder heads and retain a stock appearance, look into getting either some better GM heads (the 461 and 462 heads flow pretty well) or some aftermarket iron heads like the Dart Iron Eagle.
Whatever heads you go with, be wary about combustion chamber size... your engine with stock heads has a pretty low compression... around 8.75:1. You don't want to get a head with a large chamber that will drop your compression much lower than this. Off the top of my head I can't remember if the heads you have use 62cc chambers or 70cc... or something like that. Also, stick to a smaller intake runner of about 180cc with aftermarket heads.
Good luck.
L e F t C o A s T7 Jul 21st, 02, 08:04 AM Good advice here. I was in the same boat as you. I went with the performer package (minus heads). I choose some ported and massaged 305 heads with 1.94/1.5 valves with summit roller rockers, performer cam, new timing gear set, 600 cfm 1406 carb, performer intake, headers, and dynomax exhaust. I am pleased with the HP gains since I bought it. I guestimate about 325-340 HP. NOt bad for a mild upgrade.
I agree with previous posts. Consider heads if you want good HP gains. Those 210 HP stock heads won't get it done.
good luck!

ckaram Jul 21st, 02, 04:32 PM Change the heads like everyone's saying. If you don't, that 4 barrel and intake are just gonna have you wanting more, more, more!
I also had the 210 horse 327. I now have a torquey High Energy 268 cam, 492 camel hump heads with 2.02 valves, Performer intake and Holley 650 and headers.
The heads look bonestock, and the car is twice as fun to drive compared to the 2 barrel it had.

nantuckett 67 Jul 22nd, 02, 04:21 PM Thanks so much for all your advice. Sounds like I should replace those heads after all. I don't really want a race car, just something to smoke some high-schooler every once in a while when they pull up and want to get squirly.....those tips are great!
boodlefoof Jul 23rd, 02, 07:03 AM i'll sell you a used Performer manifold for cheap if you want it. http://www.camaros.net/forum/biggrin.gif Email me at boodlefoof@hotmail.com
I would have emailed you privately about this, but your email addy isn't listed in your profile.
