I hope someone can help me. I bought a 67 that came off the strip and the interior is completely stripped. I need some ideas on what to do for the floor system, steel or aluminum? I really have no idea what I'm doing in regards to this step and have never done any sheet metal work so any help you guys can give would be fantastic.
The rest of the cars interior will be aluminum and this is going to be a pro street car when completed.

Thanks guys,

Doug

Is the floor missing? How much is there? Toe boards gonne be replaced? Firewall? Aluminum is noisy as hell on the street.
Now, no offense. But what are you personally trying to do? Just make a decision? Do the work yourself?

nothing there but frame, and cross frame from narrowed rear end joining front sub no fire wall or toe boards. motor mount have been set back about 3". so i take it that you suggest a steel floor?

I agree aluminum is noisy and rocks will dent the aluminum tubs. Are you gonna put carpet over the floors?

For a street car, go with steel hands down.

Seems it would be less expensive and faster to just install a complete new floor pan.

X2 on the floor pans. You can get it in one piece now for a very reasonable price, then make adjustment as needed.
Time is money.

Ok guys, dont flame me, this is how i received the car :)
I was thinking the same with a stock floor pan as well. second question... what do you think in regards to the firewall? put back in a stock cowl and firewall and then just cut the firewall for the motor being set back or put the motor back in stock position with a stock uncut firewall?
thanks for the help, like I said earlier, I have zero experience with metal work, my background is that I'm a 45 year old, that has done nothing but engine and electrical work on cars, so this is new territory for me and I am truly thankful for any help and direction that you guys can give me.

Unfortunately the way it is right now you will have to go a long ways back to put a full floor in properly and turn it around. Good news is everything is available and reasonably priced plus you'll get to learn a few new skills along the way if you tackle it yourself.A replacement floor pan will not go over the extra metal they have there and will not work very well with the current rear suspension. I would still think it would be the best approach for a street car over aluminum not to mention you probably will want the head room back over the current setup.

To install a full floor it would have to be cut up and fitted around everything. It can be done. Other option is to remove all the bracing in the way, install floor and reinstall bracing. I see now why you asked about aluminum. For street use I think I would cut up the full steel floor and install.
If you had the coin taking it to someone who builds race cars would be another option. They do that sort of thing all the time.

use a sheet metal floor kit like this one http://autoweldchassis.com/frames.ivnu
or

Here is some options for doing your own floors and fire wall. You will have to see if they come in steel or aluminum.

Aluminum you will have to pop rivet in.

Steel can be spot welded in.

Then caulk all seams.

Make your own templetes out of cardboard or poster board. Cut your own metal and build your own sheetmetal brake.

Thanks guys, I have an Allison aluminum interior kit here now, looks like the sheet metal will be the way to go and then cover with a heat barrier and carpet. I take it that I will just have to weld in some supports out of square stock and then weld the floor in, correct? What do you think about the firewall issue?
second question, could be a stupid one, but do I do the firewall first then floor?

Thanks so much for taking the time to help a nob! You all are great.

I would mount the firewall with some screws or clecos. Dont cut the bottom of it. Then lay the floor in and see how they line up to each other. Cut and bend as needed.

If I already had the kit I would use it and pop rivet it in. Caulk all seams. Then put dynamat or similiar material over it then carpet.

You could also use the kit as a templet then take your panels to a sheetmetal place and have them made out of steel sheetmetal.
