First let me say I do not know Quadrajets at all. I am experienced with Holleys and Carters. I got roped into working on a friends truck which has a quadrajet. The problem is it bogs if you smash the gas peddal. If this were a Holley I would increase the fuel shot. I know that will also take care of his problem. The truck runs great as long as you don't try any hole shots. Are there any adjustments to give it a bigger shot or does he need to buy parts? I tried movint the accelerator pump rod to the lower position and that didn't fix the problem. It is a 1972 Chevy truck. 350ci no performance parts on it and the carb is a new/rebuilt unit from a local auto parts store. Any advice would be appreciated (I want this thing out from in front of my house) How did I get into this anyways?

Your first mistake was letting people know that you can fix a car! I'm forever doing tune-ups and brakes on other peoples cars while mine gets lonely.

Sounds like the secondary air valve is not adjusted right, it may be opening too soon.
I'd plead ignorance and get him out of there. http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif

Make sure the daspod is not broken they are plastic. Thats the thing with a vacuum hose on one end and a link to the sec air valves on the other. Take a look at the centrifugal advance they get rusty and slow working.

A bod from idle to WOT?
Very characteristic of a Q-jet.
Do this:
1. Bring engine up to operating temp. Check all vacuum lines, replace any questionable.
2. Check to make sure dwell/timing and mixture screws are adjusted to their best position, might even give a couple degs of extra timing, say 8-10 deg BTDC
3. Place a finger over the Air Valve, give it WOT, Bog? Correct w/timing; No bog? valve opens too quick.
4. Passenger side rear of air horn, take a 3/32 allen wrench and screwdriver, loosen screw w/allen. Screwhead is pointed down, take screwdriver, turn CCW one turn, now tighten spring w/screwdriver CW, you'll feel resistance, 3/4 turn, test for bog, if still there, tighten spring in 1/4 increments until vanished.

I don't know how tall you are but I made my friend build me a stool so I could actually reach the thing.

Oger, unfortunately I'm 6'3" which is just another excuse he uses to get me to work on this wreck. Even with my height it is still a pain. Maybe I will build him a stool so he won't be able to use that excuse anymore.

Tall people sit their butt on the radiator support and feet on both sides of the fenderwells, I know.

Thank you Everett and David. It was the secondary air valve. The adjustment was simple and pretty straight foward. That took care of the problem. This site is as good as it gets.
