I have been looking for a short block 350 , at the local junk yards, and have found a place with a couple of 350 blocks. I wanted to know what type of power I can look at with this set up.I just want to see if it is worth the money to swap out my 305.

stock 305 heads to bump compression up
-Comp cam Duration at .050 Int 211 Esh 221
lobe lift intake .2950 exh .3100 Lobe sep. 110.
-Edelbrock Performer Intake with EGR blocked off
-Accel Super coil, and moroso spring and weight kit.
- 1 3/4 headers
- Flowmaster Crossflow muffler 80 series 3in.
Initially I will run stock pistons etc.
Thanks for the help. :0

Your looking at about 275-280hp with strong torque from just above idle to about 4500 rpms. The headers are too big though...if you haven't bought a set yet you would be better off with smaller tubes (1 5/8", or better yet 1 1/2"). I would also consider a single pattern cam because the exhaust port on most 305 heads is pretty good compared to the intake. What head castings are you using off the 305? Also, if you are using the stock 305 q-jet (I assume), you would be better off using the EGR as the engine will run cooler and be much less detonation prone...no matter what the compression ends up at.

That's pretty generous, considering a stock 350 (of this vintage), 4BBL makes around 170hp. So 100hp from a cam swap onto a 350 with 8.5:1 pistons and poor heads and headers that'll kill any torque he can expect to make might alter the actual numbers.

Also, I take it from his username he has a 1976 Camaro, so if he hasn't changed the gearing in his car, the 2.73's will kill any acceleration potential.

This is a common problem with this style car. Even if the engine produces good numbers, the fact that the car was a V8 with original high gearing will stun him when one of them fart pipe equipped jobs cleans his clock. (fortunantly the 2.73 gear is a 3 series carrier which can go up to 4.10)

PS: I hope the guy is talking about 305 HO heads at least.... with the 1.84" intake valve. If he's talking about using his original 305 heads, the ones with the 1.72" intake valve - with this cam... forget it.

The heads I currently have are stock , the only thing I did was change out the springs. It sounds like 350 heads may be better. I also have a 600 cfm edelbrock carb. A gearing upgrade is on the to do list, I would like to go 3.73. I guess for the change to be noticed though my gearing will have to change from my current 2.7 range.

That's what I thought you were saying. You have (had) the LG3 version of the 305. So I assumed by "stock heads" you meant the LG3 version. The heads on these engines are total junk. The LG4 from 1982 on was a little better. These heads are often considered when people want to raise compression but the problem with these is limited airflow on a bigger cube engine.

Get your 350 short block. Find a set of "performance" heads. Nothing expensive, but something that was used on an engine in the mid 200hp range.

Put 1 5/8 headers on the car and the 3.73 gears and you'll be doing well.

Nasty, I guess I missed the obvious, huh? It's been so long since I have even seena 1.72 valved 305 head I forgot about them. The LG3 heads are pretty well done by 5K on a 305...worthless for a 350. 305HO heads would be a good upgrade though for a dished piston, smog headed 350.

Thanks for the input. I just was thinking I could save some money using the stock heads I currently have. My 305 engine has about 2000 miles on it. I bought it from kragen rebuilt. I may just see what happens with a 350 short block and use parts I have compiled with my 305 engine, Ill let u guys know how it works out. It may be neat just to experiment with what I have. I am trying to teach myself out of my garage what works and doesnt. Anyhow thanks a lot for the help I appreciate it.
