View Full Version : intake choice
Big Sky 68Z28 Sep 27th, 02, 01:32 PM I have a warmed over L78 69 RS/SS four speed with 3:31 rear end. What intake manifold do you suggest to go with Holley 750dp? Cam has 620 intake, 629 exhaust lift and 260 duration at.050. 106 lobe centerline solid lifter cam.
CamaroNOTcamero Sep 27th, 02, 02:51 PM what engine?
chacane67 Sep 27th, 02, 03:13 PM Probally a 2925 Super Victor.....
Big Sky 68Z28 Sep 27th, 02, 04:44 PM 375 HP 396CI
CamaroNOTcamero Sep 27th, 02, 05:09 PM What does the rest of the motor consist of. Seems like one heafty cam to be in a "warmed over" 396.
67camss/rs Sep 27th, 02, 05:17 PM Agree with CnC about the cam. Quite stout,to say the least.Have a Competition cam in a 396. Has a .556 lift on intake and exhaust. When you fire it up you know the cam is there. Not sure what intake is on the motor. Will check tomorrow and post it.
MoeSS396 Sep 27th, 02, 05:45 PM I think he means it s a stock L78 with a bigger cam. That cam is wild but that aint the question your asking, you need a single plane aka victor or team G.
CamaroNOTcamero Sep 27th, 02, 06:11 PM if its a stock motor i think you'd agree that both the cam and the victor JR that everyone wants on top of it are both a mismatch.
travis Sep 27th, 02, 07:40 PM Nowhere near enough gear for that much cam in a 396. Your left leg wll be twice as big as your right leg just from all the clutch slipping your going to have to do to drive that thing http://www.camaros.net/forum/biggrin.gif That much cam definately warrants a good single plane intake.
chacane67 Sep 27th, 02, 08:44 PM AHHH....big block. I should pay attention when someone writes L78.
BBCamaro Sep 28th, 02, 01:27 AM hey with that kinda motor you want to check out Dart's stuff, i have a dart single plane rect port intake and its awesome, they are more money , but thats for a reason!!!
goodluck

pdq67 Sep 28th, 02, 04:20 AM This is a good post.
Chevy just cut the divider down on the old L-88 manifolds b/c they never sold a stock single plane. The results speak for themselves with the awesome power that a stock, but headered L-88 would make!!
Another very good and lower priced as well as lower installed height is a Holley Strip Dom. single plane. It will hold it's own with the Dart up to not quite the top, but for the price to me is great value!!
I installed one on my "tow-truck" 496 engine for brother-in-law bragging rights to get me above 550 hp!!! It takes some away down low and adds it back up top... pdq67
oger Sep 28th, 02, 06:44 AM Whats wrong with the stock one? I used them on bracket BBs for years they work fine and will help with your low speed torgue. One other thing you may not like that double pumper with 3.31s and as much cam as you have.
Big Sky 68Z28 Sep 28th, 02, 06:59 AM I'm planning on a gear change. This engine didn't have the right intake on it. Looked for a "correct" one but could buy a better aftermarket one for the same price. The car is street car with an occassional drag strip pass. I don't want to much gear or I won't be able to drive it anywhere. My old Camaro had 5.13 rear with 33" slicks. It was a little tight. Looking to 3.73 for a good in the middle gear. What would be a better carb choice? I wonder if a 750 is enough.
Eric68 Sep 29th, 02, 05:46 AM I think Big Red would say 830 DP annular Holley - and I'd have to agree with him on this one. There aparently is both an ordinary 4150 and an HP version of the carb. the HP version runs about $600 while the ordinary 4150 runs about $350 from Scoggin Dickey.
As for the intake, IMO if you are going to make this puppy rev and will use steeper gears in the future a single plane would be the best match for the combo. If you need to bring back as much low end as you can to make this cam liveable on the street with "cruising gears" I'd give up a little of the top end in favor of the better street manners a dual plane will have.

67camss/rs Sep 29th, 02, 09:08 AM Sorry to take so long. The intake I have is an Edelbrock C396. Appears to work okay. Engine it was on ran low 11's in a 68 Chevelle.I've since re-built the motor, but have not had it to the track.
oger Sep 29th, 02, 02:11 PM A C396 is an oval port manifold. If you have oval port heads I consider it to be the best manifold there is for the street.
bruce69camaro Sep 30th, 02, 06:53 AM I'm running close to what your cam size is and I'm using an weiand X-celerator intake with oval port heads. It's good from 1500rpm to 7000rpm.

Big Sky 68Z28 Sep 30th, 02, 01:40 PM I'm running square port L78 heads. The manifold has to the vacuum port in the back for power brakes and RS headlights. Some aren't ported there. Weiand Team G looks like my likely choice, still unsure about carb size.
67camss/rs Oct 1st, 02, 04:11 PM oger, I'm not sure about the heads.I've got 2 big blocks and 2 small blocks and can't keep track of which head is on which motor.I do know that the heads on the 396 are those recommended in the book"How to hot rod big blocks".Hope to get the 396 into the 67 this winter.
pdq67 Oct 2nd, 02, 07:46 AM That would be the -781 or -049 ovals if I remember right. I have the old book and it is about worn out. pdq67
