I, too, have a 450 hp 383 stroker and a 4 speed..
My idle sis et right about 800-900

I can't keep it running anything under that...

as it is, it takes until it is warm to idle at 8-900...

I have a Holley 650 DP, and can only pull about 5 inches of vacuum ( on a good day)!

yeah--it makes getting it to idle correctlky a challenge...and forget any hope of power brakes (at least vacuum assist power brakes)...

Very aggressive solid lifter cam...

you got that right Keith, thats the problem that I have keeping it running I tried to set the timing but it jumps around saw much I am just going by hearing it run and setting the idle is a challenge, this is the first time I have fired it up since it was rebuilt and it just will not stay running, and I am no good with ajusting carb every time I touch one I aways make it worse, I can tune up a car but when it comes to carburetor forget it, I will work on it today

Keith, how did you set your carbuator idle screw setting up or any help with mine, I would like to get it running right so I can move on to something else and get her on the road for the first time and I have a lot to do, I had completely gutted her.

Thanks

Make sure that the car is warmed up to temp (you may have to "nurse" the throttle a little until it gets there) and set the idle screw so it will run on it's own (even if at a higher RPM)...this will keep it runnig while you do the rest of the adjustments.

Now, back the idle screw off about an 1/8 turn at a time until the car gets ott he idle you want, or it starts to stumble. If it stumbles, put the 1/8 turn bac k on it (so it will run on its own), and hook up a vacuum gauge to a port ont he bottom of the carb.
Turn the idle mixture screws on each side of the carb slightly (1/8 turn again), until you get the max vac. you can on the dial.

Now, go back and repeat until you get the idle where you want it...takes time and patience, and I am not sure if this is technically the "correct" method, but it got me idling between 8-900 RPM in neutral...

Once the car is set and runnin on it's own, the adjust the floats.

Place a rag under the carburetorfor any over sill, and the use a flathead screw driver and a 5/8 wrench...

Remove the site plug from the bowl...loosen the locknut and turn the screwdriver (this will adjust the float) until fuel just starts to barely trickle out of the site plug hole...replace the site plug, and repeat on the secondaries...

Thanks Keith, I will do that and see what happens,

I should have mentioned--on adjusting the mixture screws, astart by screwing them all the way in until the gently "seat", then back out 1.5 turns (this will give you a great "starting point"

The adjustment ont he mixture can go wither way--in or out, so it will take some trial and error...

Hi Keith, I got it to stay running but but it still needs some fine tuneing, I am selling my home so I have been busy with that & looking for a new place in Live Oak Florida, a friend is going to come over that know the 383 stroker he has a dragster that has one and he is going to fine tune it for me, my driveshaft will be here next week so I can take it to him if he can't come here, thank's for the help like I said before I am no good with carbs I can do just about anything esle but that
