View Full Version : 89 CAMARO 2.8 SWAP TO CRATE 350 HO 330 HP
KEVY G Mar 4th, 02, 04:35 PM Hows it going guys. Been a wile since ive been on. Need some advice on what to do. I bought a 350 ho 330 crate motor. What would be a better ttansmission to run. 350 or 400 turbo. Have an 89 camaro with a 2.8 in it now. What type of surprses am I going to run in to. What all do I have to bypass to make it run. Thanks for the advise.

Bink Mar 4th, 02, 05:00 PM I'd go with the 350 trans, the 400 is heavier, but it is suposed to be stronger. Me and my dad both run turbo 350 trans, and have had no problems, other than what we caused ourself.I thought the lighter trans was best, but that is just my opinion.

Spames Mar 5th, 02, 03:09 AM What transmission is in it?
If it's a 200R or 700R, KEEP IT.

bruce69camaro Mar 5th, 02, 04:45 AM your in for a lot of work, from what i've been advised. first, the tranny in your car will not bolt up to a v-8. i wanted to do the same with my 90, and from what i was told, seeing it's a v-6 car, everything will have to be switch to items for a v-8 car. you'll need to check items for the suspension, new frame mounts, radiator, hoses, pulleys, brackets, exhaust, cooling fan , as for the computer run items, i'm not sure if you have to buy a computer from a v-8 car. i know alot of people have done, but i was told it's easier to buy a v-8 that needs work and fix that one up. i'm not trying to talk you out of doing the swap, but when i heard all the troubles i decided against it. i'm going to build up the v-6. if you had a choice of trannys, go with the turbo-350. there dependable and easy to find a replacement for. or even better, maybe located a 700r4 from a v-8 car.

KEVY G Mar 5th, 02, 10:37 AM Its a 700 r4 from what ive heard you cant keep the trans because of the bell housing. The car has been complety restored other than the motor. I know its going to take work. Do they have a book out that any one knows about. Thanks for the info keep it coming please..

bigboyp4 Mar 6th, 02, 02:33 PM hey,
just finished my 305 swap in my '85 2.8l MPFI. i was very suprised in the way mine went together smoothly. engine mounts are the first thing, just buy new and bole them up on your crossmember (its a pain, but it can be done) other than that, make sure your tranny crossmember is off, then the drop in is quite simple. you can use the same tranny mount off your 700r4 on your new tranny (dont matter what it is), and i think you should be able to bolt your old tail shaft onto your new tranny (this worked on my 700r4 to v8 700r4 tranny, but i believe th350 and th400 are the same tail size) that way you can maintain your correct speedo, and be able to have your trac bar mount. trac bar is the hardest thing in the install process. starter wires right up. there are two wires going to your coil, one is power (fat one), one is tach (i am running a hei, i am carbed) i dont know anything bout the fuel injectiion. if you get a v8 gauge set, the oil pres and temp gauges work if you hook up the appropriate wires. since i am carbed, i ran a hose from the main feed line to the fuel pump (my pump only has one hookup, no return) and i just made the return held up on the brake line with a zip tie. i put a caprice radiator in mine (took a little hammer work, but it fits) then i bought custom hoses (the guy at autozone let my pick the ones i wanted from the back shelf) i left my efi fuel pump still hooked up and to my suprise, it works! i am very pleased with my swap and my car is a beast. i recomend a 700r4 (i got one out of a 91 caprice, it had overdrive). good luck. email me with any questions. jhartland@buckeye-express.com
