: vin vs cowl
gatortalk Jun 29th, 10, 06:20 PM Interested in a 67, but the seller wont give the Vin# to me....
He says the cowl # is all the info I need on the car, that he wont give the vin # to a stranger. Is this something I should be concerned about, or is that normal protocol.... Thanks for helping someone who deff on the learning curve....

69Project Jun 29th, 10, 06:29 PM Go look at the car if you can. Some folks don't like giving that stuff over the phone or internet because they are afraid of scammers (folks who counterfeit this stuff). Of course the guy may be scamming you because while the VIN will only tell you if its a V8 or 6 cyl car the sequence number of the VIN needs to within range associated with the build date on the trim tag.
Being there in person will force the guy to show you both and then you can figure out if everything is as it should be. If he won't do it face to face then go find another Camaro, there are plenty out there.
Jess67 Jun 29th, 10, 11:18 PM 67 trim tags will tell you more than 68 or 69 will. The vin will be in the door jamb on a plate. There was a guy on here a few weeks ago bought a car and the trim tag said NOR, and vin said LOS, or vice versa. Walk away if it does. If you can get the trim tag numbers or a pic and the guys here can decode and tell you what options it has.
67Rally Jun 30th, 10, 03:05 AM Vin would be nice to have so you could make sure it wasn't reported stolen.

VIN could tell yah if the car was "salvaged or not", the Cowl tag won't tell yah that..
Eric Kammerer Jul 1st, 10, 05:49 AM I am not good at all with the 67 tags, spotting an original vs repro.
But Mike, you definitely want to know if the VIN and cowl tag "line up" to have some confidence they started life on the same car.
If the seller/car is some distance away, at least get him to give you most of the VIN, like all but the last three digits. If we have most of the VIN, like 124377N340xxx, we can tell what month the VIN came down the assembly line. If the VIN date and cowl tag date are not close, then there is a problem.
If you get as far as inspecting the car, then you will want to make sure the body partial VIN (under the cowl vent grille sheetmetal) matches the VIN in the door jamb, to make sure the car has not been "rebodied". An original 67 VIN tag will be attched at the front of the driver side door jamb with rosette head rivets.
http://www.camaros.org/numbers.shtml#PartialVIN
And as far as not giving the VIN being weird... VINs since 1968 are visible on the dash, which was primarily for law enforcement folks to see, but anyone can see the numbers. Some folks are paranoid and won't give them out for cars they own or are selling, but it is really not an issue privacy-wise.
gatortalk Jul 1st, 10, 06:18 AM This is the car in question..... Gonna take a peek at it next week, but wanna have my ducks in a row as well.... Tell me what you guys think, He's asking 11,500 now, this is the ad...
This is not a hard up for money sale...
I have a 67 SS/RS camaro for sale that needs some retoration. I just need garage space for the 1LT Synergy Special Edition I have on order. It will keep our 69 SS Camaro company in the garage. $15,500 obo
This car has alot of factory options that is uncommon to find in one car.
SS/350 with optional RS Package
350 w/2.02 camel hump heads (395hp) non #s matching
2 spd pwr gld auto trans
10 bolt open differiential
Factory A/C & Heat w/rear defrost
Factory Pwr Steering
Factory Pwr 4 wheel Drum Brakes
Factory Pwr Antena
Factory Deluxe Interior
This car needs full rear sheet metal, interior, and glass if I would finish the
restoration. Problem is I'm to old w/bad knees to this type of work anymore.
Everything is there and the car runs and drives just fine. I started the restore
when we bought the car and made it a reliable daily driver.
This is a list of what I have replaced;
Entire brake system except hard lines
Booster & Master cylinder
all wheel cylinders
flex hoses
spring kits
hubs and shoes
All bearings and races Frt/Rr
All subframe bushings
All suspension Frt/Rr bushings
All steering system incld. Tie rods and links etc.
Rewired entire car including fuse block
New headlight motors
Upgraded front swaybar
HEI disributer
Holly 600 w/vac secondaries
Performer intake
Hedders
The car is still a reliable daily driver.
It has been sitting in the garage for a year.
When I first posted the car for sale, the car still ran great.
The A/C is even still working..
knightmoose Jul 1st, 10, 11:10 PM BLUF: Bottom line up front,
Car needs a complete restoration: rust is surely under that vinal top and im sure the under carraige has rust.
Car doesnt have the POP no protecto plate. I wouldnt want a 395 HP when i can throw a stroker 383 in the car with upwards of 500 hp iwith aluminum heads. The 10 bolt says it all everything is at the engine and nothing gets to the floor...
A hotrod completely built up with no body work goes for about 15-18k where im at in california why would i buy a car for 15,500 that probally needs 10k in retroration work, POP means a lot to me, if she was a plane jane with the protecto plate i would still haggle you but at least she would be more than just a good driver as every body in there rice burner wants to see what a 1st generation camaro can do.
A. Either you have matching numbers and the protecto plate and its ok she a driver and slower that a fat pig running fool speed down hollywood blvd so you can cruise block to block
B. She has balls and will smoke you, no in between in the hobby and this is a prime example of where the hobby has gone over the years...
I wouldnt pay the "seller" 15k for the car by the specs she is slow and you dont have matching numbers/pop she needs restroration work and a total strip down, the seller appears to be all up on trying to get top $$$ for her.
With all that being said, some people have simply held on to these cars and dont truly know enough about them other than they have some fixed value of what they think the car is worth in their mind, hence "THIS ISNT A HARD UP SALE", or Im not going to share the VIN number with you,,, sound like a load of bull and by the specs opf the car she is slow and i know you can do better... probally needs at least 10k in restro as rust has to be all up under that vinal top ...
My brother sold his 68 dodge charger with a 318 in iot for 18k a month ago, he just bought a 67 camaro in calfiornia for 16,500 in the modesto area, and he had about 10 cars on craigslist to choose from between a 67 and 68 camaro, his car doesnt have the pop but looks really nice, im taking military leave this weekend and driving there if you want me to send you a picture let me know.. i think you can do better, the economy sucks right now and people need cash ... to much for that car...
When i see the picture i dont see a sale at 15,500 rather i see a car at 25 or 30k as i picture what i would want the car to be in the end and what it would take to get her there, so maybe a car selling at 18k is better in the long run depending on what you have to do to her, and a great plane jane even hot rod already done is selling between 15-20k where im at of course pop slaes for a lot more.. take care god bless.
67Rally Jul 2nd, 10, 03:48 AM ...I wouldnt pay the "seller" 15k for the car...
He did say the seller is down to $11,500.
gatortalk Jul 2nd, 10, 06:24 AM He did say the seller is down to $11,500.
He has come off that 15,500.... Down to 11,500, and its been at that for a few weeks now. Thanks so much for you guys' input, this is what I need to know, I appreciate the time and thought given in that reply Knight, please keep it coming, but 11,500 sounds more tempting, maybe even get another grand off that price......
You guys are the best, thanks!!
knightmoose Jul 2nd, 10, 06:26 AM He did say the seller is down to $11,500.
Roger add 10k to the car at least and thats just to make it a good looking driver without the power, thus its still over 20k for the car when its all said and done with no "POP" and a 10 bolt rear end with all that rust.. I think you can do better and get a better deal else where. This car doesnt have the "protecto plate", no matching numbers, needs a hole lot of body work, im assuming border town work in el paso would get the car in decent shape around 10k, take her to cali and good luck body work is expensive, and if it looks like that from the outside who knows what the car looks like underneath..
10 bolt rear end rust bucket doesnt equate to 11,500 for me,because i have to add the body work to it, totally stripped down and who knows what panels will need to be replaced, thats just to make it a slow driver, with no "POP", its to much for a car that needs that work. Take a look at what cars in decent shape are going for versus something you have to tangle with. I have no issues with engine or tranny work, i can get a 383 and a good TCI street fighter from Summitt all day long, even get a 12 bolt , which a good 1 is running around $2500, still in the end i say to you body work is worse especially when dealing with the rust cancer..
Vintage 68 Jul 2nd, 10, 12:39 PM There should be a 12-bolt in that vehicle - so I see at least $2k less right there ;)
There should be a 23" radiator in it - its got a 21" ;)
The hood has later year inserts in it, I would check for drain hole system to confirm it a 1967 SS hood ;)
Check the Glove Box (dash) lid for a tire sticker and confirm original size tires ;)
Check for Dual-exhaust hangars in the rear - most don't mess with these over the years ...
I would very carefully check the VIN sequence vs. the cowl ;) [I'm not convinced with the one there ...]
I would carefully confirm it was really what it is shown/said to be ;)
I agree with Evan - I would not overpay for that car :noway:
There are some real money-pits out there right now being sold as "easy restores" and they are far from that.
Lots of sellers stick these things on the net with those 'I don't "have to" seel this' but .. ads and then hope some dream-eyed kid will buy it at their price - or at least make an offer near it - they need the car gone, need the money for the replacement 'garage mate' and don't want to spend the time or money to make it right a get real $$$ from it - so you hold the cards in this deal :)
IJMHO ... @$7.5k tops is where I would go with it - just knowing how much its going to cost to get it to a $25k vehicle ...
Make him a cash offer you feel comfortable with after seeing hte car and totalling up the cost to get what 'YOU' want it to be - then walk away if he doesn't take it  ... if he's smart he will call you in the next day or so and accept your offer ;)
He thinks he's selling a 1967 RS/SS 350 - I'm not convinced he's not selling a 327/PG with 'extras' ...

Here is the link to my brothers buy in california. I really got way involved here, he visited me and saw my camaros and started telling me how he would rather have a 1st generation camaro over his 68 charger that was in decent shape with a stock 318 in it. He gotthe car appraised and sold it for 18k in craigslist. He decided a 67 was for him and did some local craigslist searches which yeilded several in california at first he wanted onlyto spend 12k although they werent rusted i kept telling him especially since i felt as if i was responsible for him diving into this mess that he needed to get something he could enjoy and drive versus buying something that needed more restroation work.
His car is a clone, i have told him he shopuld get the spoiler in the back, he bought the car from a woman, hence, debs camaro the plates have already been changed out at the dmv, the engine is a fresh 350 non matching numbers, he does have a manual stick shift transmission and the car has a 10 bolt rear end but is a very good driver and has no rust at all, and the body is solid, the car will aprreciate in value as time progresses...
im on my way to california to see the car as im on military leave i will post a picture next week with me and him in it for a drive, i swear unto you friend he had several to choose from in great shape .. i dont personally care for the color but im glad he didnt have to throw a away a bunch on an over priced car, please im just saying be patient and do some serious looking its way better to buy something and enjoy it right away doesnt have to have the pop could be a nice daily driver but for christ sakes i would surely share my vin with yah what is there to hide..
Please compare what that guy thought was worth 15k at first versus what my brother bought in california for 16k... thats all im saying Good luck happy new years God Bless.
Vintage 68 Jul 2nd, 10, 01:10 PM I just get "Tanya" - but she is a cute kid
What I think is worth $15~16k and what someone else thinks its worth, are usually two different things - but its also usually my money ... ;)
knightmoose Jul 2nd, 10, 03:04 PM hit view albumn to see the car pictures after hitting the link to see the car my brother bought.
