Hey guys i just got my camaro running good after my uncle give me his 71 Rally Sport 350 which has been siting for 3 years when i run it at idle it barely smokes with alittle white smoke mixed in and when I let it rev at 2000 rpm for like five minutes it smokes pretty good any suggestions?? I think it may be the valve guides and seals????

rePLY back!

THanks, mATT

If it was sitting 3 years chances are the valve seals rotted into oblivion. They are pretty easy to replace even without removing the heads or engine.

Some folks us an adpt. screwed into the spark plug hole, allowing one to put compessed air in the cyl. to hold the valve up. Then you just remove the springs with the spring compressor of choice, and replace the seals.I prefer using a length of small rope, rotate the piston down in the bore, stuff the rope in the cylinder, rotate the piston back up until it won,t turn anymore and do your spring removal.

What does the oil cap look like? Does it have caked on crud? I'm sure oil seals are needed, but if the head is full of dried up oil goo, it won't drain back properly. Then oil puddles around a bad seal and it looks like you're driving past Chong's house. Just make sure those drain back holes are open when you take the valve covers off. A little kerosene rinse won't hurt anything either.

Oh, no Nova, the rope is standard to do!!

BTW, you might drop a half Bottle of good old Marvel Mystery in the oil and put the rst in the tank and drive her for like 500 miles and see if she doesn't loosen/soften up. Plus get cleaner!! Then change oil and then watch her real good.
