Hi,
I have a 1984 Camaro, 305, 700r4, stock rearend, I wanna pull out the 305, and drop in a 350 4bolt main stock shortblock, with Edelbrock (Or corvette) Aluminum heads, and a couple other mods, Demon 750 carb, Holley Singleplane intake manifold, k&n filter,Comp Cams Camshaft, and so-on.... just wondering if I will have to change the rearend right then, or if it'll hold up to the power for a while, because the car is gonna be a daily driver along with being a weekend dragcar... I am pretty sure the tranny has been rebuilt with a shiftkit, but I just don't know about the rear, it's a 10-bolt, that's about all I know... lol.... but I think I need a little help here....

Thanks!!!

I have an 82 z 28 . I ran a 13.31 on radials with a 355, turbo 350 trans w/shift kit, and the stock rear end with 3:42 gears. But since I have radials it was spinning taking off. I never got to hook good enough to see if the rear would hold up. I am now in the process of changing to a stronger rearend because of some motor improvements, and i got some drag radials.

yea... I will be using radials also, but I will be running 295's on the rear, with 15x10 rims... and I have lift bars, and airshocks in the rear also, for added traction... but are you saying that the rear will hold up to drive around town enough untill I can save up enough money for a stronger rearend???I prob won't race with that rear, but I will need it to be able to get me to and from work everyday... untill I get a new ford 9" or a chevy 12-bolt with some 3.73's or something....

thanks!

It should be okay to get you around town in,

I did this once with an 84 Z28. It had the 5 speed in it but the same 7.5" 10 bolt rearend with 3.23 gears. The rearend held up fine for 2 or 3 years - then it blew.

2 or 3 years should be long enough... lol... I just need it to last a few months....
does my combo sound remotely powerful??? I am planning on running the 350,
Edelbrock or corvette Aluminum heads, Holley single plane intake manifold, 1" carb spacer, Barry Grant Demon Carb (750cfm), Hooker Supercomp Headers, dual Flowmaster Exhaust (Deltaflow mufflers)(IT IS POSSIBLE!!) aluminum water pump, cast aluminum valve covers, March underdrive pulleys, a K&N X-stream airflow lid and 14x4" filter... with a NOS Super Powershot system... sound good??? please tell me if there are any problems with my combo.... The exhaust system is possible, I have allready looked into that....

with the 700r4, and 12-bolt(or ford 9"), and I am hoping to run around 12's with a 125 shot of NOS, on street GT radials.... and I am doing a few things for weight reduction, Fiberglass 4" cowl hood, polycarbonate rear window, Bucket racing seats, carbon fiber steeringwheel, removing A/C... and so on, I have allready, fiberglass z28 hood, removed cruise control, removed windsheild washer motor and bottle, and I removed all emitions controls, pumps, etc.... there are no emitions here in florida, GOOD THING!!! so......

I have blown up four 3.23 diffs in my '83. 2 because they were already worn, 1 because I was a dummy and tossed 'er into gear at 3500 rips, and 1 due to a 325 HP 350 with only 3000 KM on the rear (bad build?). Anyway, it should technically hold, but don't blow a spazz if she grenades on you, it can happen with any diff. As far as yiour combo goes, might I suggest a dual plane intake? Better for torque and daily drivability.

You might also want to consider Trick Flow 23* heads. they are cheaper then the Edelbrocks and last time I looked at the numbers the TF's flowed better. Canfield heads also flow very well, perhaps as good as the AFR 195's and are about the same price as the Edelbrocks.

Edelbrock has recently made some changes to their heads though (I think) that may have improved performance. I'm not sure if I would bother with the Corvette heads, they are tough to find used and probably cost a mint through a dealer.

I noticed that Jegs now has their own line of heads - anyone know what they flow?

The key to making real power is the heads - get heads that flow well!

Here's something to think about. You might want to think about getting rid of the air shocks. Your car won't squat down in the rear becuase of the shocks being to stiff. Maybe look into a set of gas shocks or a set of CE shocks for the rear.
Tire spin is a big time killer on the track.

The factory torque arm only compounds traction problems and rearend durability.
It adds forces to the driveline that only make both jobs more difficult.

Try to find an aftermarket one.

Thanks 69camaro... I will definately look into some gas shocks.... I am also adding new "Competition Engineering" "Lift bars", and also Helper springs for the gas shocks... for a little added "UMPH"... lol... I want the rear to sit as high as possible, for the best traction possible, considering I am going to be using normal Street Radial tires, I will have 295x65x15R in the rear, with 15X10 Weld Prostar rims...

Thanks for everyone's input!!!!

You might want to look at a Borg Warner 9 bolt rear end. I've run one behind my big block for 4 years now (1.72-1.75 60ft). Parts are more expensive, but they are strong. I have lots of 9 bolt parts available at www.9bolt.com (http://www.9bolt.com)
