Hello
I am abou to order a hood insulation for my camaro!
Saw the cheap one that goes for under 20$ and the ''molded'' one that is around 90$

How well does the cheap one looks? which one would you advice me to buy?

I replaced my cheap one with a molded one and there was a huge difference in looks. I can send a pic to your email but am not sure how to upload pics here .

I also went with a molded insulation. Here is some pics. I got mine from Rick's and when they shipped it they used the a huge box and beside the insulation they shipped all the loose packing they had laying around they're warehouse. I think the shipping was as much as the insulation.

I picked up a molded one off ebay with free shipping for around $90.

Note there are the correct retainers and functional replacements.

Even the correct ones need a little customizing to hold them in.

I bought my car with a cheap one already installed. The very first time I drove it in the rain (not intentional) it started falling apart. Keep in mind the car has only been driven a hand full of times since the restoration was completed. In my opinion a cheap one should even last longer then this.

I got a molded one and can confirm the shipping was terrible. The only thing more terrible was the quality of the retainers. I started finding them on my shop floor after the install. The lip that is supposed to hold them in isn't even close to big enough.

I just replace the ones that fall out with a newer style that actually holds. I drill 4 holes in them to make them look "correct"!!

IMHO, the "cheap" ones look awful. Brian

We bitched about this issue in the assembly plants for years, as there were sheared-off plastic hood pad clips on the floor all over the place.

The die process at the Chevrolet stamping plant that produced the hood inner panel kept the panel in car position through the draw, trim and pierce dies, so the holes for the clips were pierced from the top down; this left a sharp edge on the bottom of the holes, which tended to shear the "ears" off the stem of the plastic clips when they were inserted (with a plastic mallet).

Every year we asked them to pierce the clip holes in the other direction, but they would have had to add a turnover station in the middle of the press line, and that was big bucks, so it never happened.

We swept up thousands of sheared hood pad clips off the floor every day; same issue was present in every Chevrolet plant, not just Camaro, as all Chevrolet hood inner panels were die-processed the same way. Photo below of a typical multi-station 60's-70's tandem press line; 2/3rds of each press is below floor level.

my experience with the cheap insulation and cowl hood was once the hood is closed, the engine fan creates so much rotating wind under the hood that the insulation would always rip apart and fall..not sure it would have happened with a non cowl hood.

and yes the clips were terrible!!

If you want factory appearing hood insulation...The molded insulation is the only way to go, i can just imagine the oversized shipping fees from USA to Quebec....

bonne chance !!

REM supplies a reproduction "square" attachement clip. Is this clip cosmetically correct in spite of its retention problems.

Evidently there are owners who have modified clips so as they stay in place ????

Thanks for any education you can help with

Can anybody post pics/give specs on original OEM plastic retention clips for the cowl induction hood molded insulation.

Also asking for vendor/mfg of repro correct plastic clip.

From what I've read here at TC, the original clips were round with 4 holes....these from Rick's seem to match that description.....http://www.rickscamaros.com/camaro-hood-insulation-mounting-clip-set-1967-1969.html

The Ricks clips look like my originals.

Still trying to conclude if ALL the 67-69 Camaro molded hood insulation retaining clips were the round style (as above in post #3).

Does anyone know who actually mfg these and sells to all the other on line vendors.

Can anyone sell or loan me ONE G.M. factory Original (even if bard portion is broken)
