For the run of the mill 3000 stall street converter. Who makes the best unit?? Is Hughes quality up there with the others??

Haven't used a Hughes for a while (abt. 10 years) but I have friends that do and like 'em. And all the other brands you mentioned are good pieces also. And Continental, Dynamic, Select, Turbo Action, PTC, A-1 and Transmission Specialties are also excellent units.
Just remember..... Don't cheap out on the converter just because you can't see it and it doesn't look cool! That's the piece of the puzzle that MUST be right.

I can pick up a Hughes 3000 for $278 bucks. Is there quality and performance the same as the other companys??? If its not up to par than I will go to the other mentioned companys.

Hughes is a great street converter with a more wallet friendly price.

Sandy Coan is the man when it come to high buck or race full blown converters....but you'll pay a premimum.

And to second an excellent reminder:

There is more truth to this than anything else when dealing with an automatic transmission.

I totally agree and I dont want to cheap out at all. I am just trying to figure out if the Hughes is going to give me the same results as the others mentioned. If I can save some bucks that would be great. If not...I have no problem spending the extra cash . I am not looking for some inefficient peice of crap.

Ya know, there is another Cat in the Oceanside, Ca area that builds a damn good converter.....but his card and phone number escape me right now.

Walt Built Transmissions

He is quite the man in the local So Cal area. Builds a mean converter. I used one that he supplied in my 69 Camaro (1320 car) and it held the best out of all that I could afford back in those days. But the car ran consistant 10.40's and held up to all the abuse I could throw at it.......manual valve body, and later a brake.......

Might be another path to your part search......

thats exactly what i was thinking. theres a guy around here that builds a bad ass converter as well, for a pretty reasonable price. he builds converters for several of my buddys cars, some of the fastest pro street class cars in the area. everyone is very satisfied, plus he stands behind his work.
my guy may be a bit out of your area, but there has got to be someone around you that does the same thing. i'd definately check out some of the local custom builders first at least.
good luck graemlins/thumbsup.gif

I will add that from the BTE, TCI and JW converters I have sold there has not been any negative feedback. For a bit more stall than what you may need though BTE has a nice street/strip 9.5" converter too that will get into the 4K stall speed area. It goes for $375, and has furnace brazed fins, dual anti-ballooning plates, good hub, new Torringtons, Steiber sprag, etc. And a full one-year warranty on the sprag and stator. Ditto on their other converters for the quality and warranty.

I'm a huge fan of the PI Vigilante
but they're pricey
the ArtCarr unit in the TTA died, replaced it with a 5-disc PI Vig

have a hughes behind the 200-4R in the '68, so far it's performed nicely (no 1/4 runs on it)

TCS is becoming popular around here from what I've seen

there is also Midwest out of Rockford IL, custom made to your specs I do believe

Coan are about the biggest name is race units

edit: I've been drinking and my typing isn't so good right now . . . lmao

Very key if the car is going to spend any time on the street. My present 2500 stall unit seems to have a ton of slippage so it's gotta' go.

As you can see it will depend on who you talk to. I am running a TCS Performance convertor and I am really happy with it. It stalls exactly where I asked/wanted it to. They are good people to deal with and take good care of you. Excellent workamanship, looks so nice you don't want to hide it under the car. The engine side is machined from billet steel. You can get a more information here: http://www.tcsperformance.com/

Oldani Motorsports,
I had a few questions for you and didn't want to bother you over on DRR site, because I didn't want other people butting in on my business.
If I can send you a message or if you want to send me you E-mail, I'd like to discuss what type of converter to use in with my camaro.
I'd really like to use a BTE converter.
Thanks graemlins/thumbsup.gif
