Hey all-
I have a 87 Camaro. I will soon be installing a 383 that will be in the upper four hundred horses range.. Right now I have a 700 R4 overdrive transmission with a stage two shift kit and a 2300 stall converter. I have been toying with the idea of swapping for some sort of five or six speed. This is my daily driver, but performance is definitely a concern. What do you think? Keep the 700 or swap?

keep it..the low ratio 1st , 2nd give up the bottom end torque, the top gears give your lower rpms for pleasant cruising trips and economy.

At least keep it until you blow it up, then make the swap. Might as well squeeze every nickel out of it that you can.

Keep it until it blows up, then get a heavy duty rebuild. Almost all of the V8 automatics came with a 2.73 rear with the only option being a 3.23 or the IROC 5.7L came with a 3.27. In my opinion, none of those are very good rears to run with a decently cammed engine and five or six speed so that would just be another expense.

Thanks for all the advice guys-
I know a motor swap and posi upgrade are in the future, but I think I will keep the 700. Of course TCI makes a auto/manual valvebody 6spd tranny.... paddle shifters anyone?

Keep it ! Not worth the cost.
