How do I install an original GM tach into a 69 Camaro dash that did not have one originaly? Mine has a fuel gauge where the tach should be. Someone told me you can get a template to help you know where to cut to make it fit. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I think you might have to get a different gauge curcuit board. Is that what they are called? The green thing with the little metal strips built into it. Either that or you could probably just get some wire and rig it up in there yourself and just disregard using the curcuit board.

tjones, no problem.
My 69 had the fuel ga. there also and I bought a Z tach to put in. I used a dremel tool with the cutting blade and slowly cut pieces away on the back side of the housing to acomodate the rear of the tach. I just took my time and did it slowly. It came out fine. I can't remmber but I think there are 2 screws that you might have to drill 2 holes for to attach the tach to the rear of the housing. I bought the new wiring harness it had the hookup for the tach built right in the harness. I hear that there is a seperate harness for the tach available.

I also put a tach in mine. I couldn't see on the back side of the dash bezel the outline of where the tach would go so I used a piece of cardbroard and traced the outline of the tach on the back and then used a dremel to cut out the plastic. I did this very slow and made sure the tach fit. There are three studs that you need to drill holes for, but that's easy with the dremel. Also you can purchase the wire harness for around $20.00. It's not really hard to install, just time consuming to do it right.

Hey guys
Great info. I'm also interested in this process. Just printed out the post for future reference.

There should be a faint outline on back of the gauge cluster for the tach hole, just cut it out by using the outline.
