What a night! A couple weeks ago I posted how my car won't run faster than 99mph. Well I followed your guy's much appreciated suggestions, but NO LUCK. I decided to call it quits after 2 runs. Here they are:
Run #1
60' 2.057
330'5.828
1/8 8.946@79.12
1000' 11.639
1/4 13.915@99.02

Run #2
60'2.100
330' 5.877
1/8 9.009@79.00
1000' 11.705
1/4 13.980@99.16
Combo:
69' RS, 3558# w/me, 355 SBC 5.7" rods
LT1(old) heads,ported 2.02/1.60
10.3:1 SCR
650HP carb reworked flows 770cfm
hyd. isky .485/.485 230*/230*@.050
Perf. RPM Air-Gap 1" open spacer
1-5/8" Hooker super comps x-pipe w/2.5"& Cutouts
Th350 3200-3400 stall
4.11 posi, Cal tracs, Comp Eng Adj. Drag shocks,
McCreary dirt track tires

You guys suggested that it might be exhaust, fuel or the 4-hole spacer I had. I ditched the 4-hole for an open spacer, I put cut-outs in and used them, I put a fuel regulator on and it sits at 6.5psi the whole time.
Could it be the converter, or the heads or somebody screwing w/me in the tower? Your guy's expertise is much needed before I lose it. graemlins/angry.gif Thanx in advance! graemlins/thumbsup.gif

What rpms are you going thru the traps at? Makes me suspect the convertor.

Geez..I totally forgot! I ran my GTech too. Run #1 said I ran a 13.572@103.42 and Run #2 said 13.595@103.5. I forgot to say that I ran 103 octane race gas, and I between runs I changed the timing from 34* to 36* total and it netted me no change in MPH. Gtech's hp readings said I have 190rwhp@5200 and 198lb-ft@4900rpm both times! Also the hp and torque curves fall off (like a cliff) at about 5300rpm. I can feel that it doesn't pull past 5000rpm. I know its not 100% accurate but it shows what's goin' on. Sorry for the long post. :D

A friend of mine has a very similar combo to yours, the major difference being his 350HP replica camshaft. His times are 13.50's @ 102 mph and near identical 60's to yours. So, you are very close.

Who's converter are you running?

Again, PLEASE STAY WITH IT! Let us help figure out what's amiss in your combo.

How are your valve springs? Just a thought since you say the motor's just making noise above 5000.

A 485/230 cam should be making you power at higher R's than what you describe. Focusing nn converter and rear end also makes sense.

The valve springs aren't making noise, and I don't think I have valve float. The converter is a Dacco PP3401 10" 32-3400stall. Not too familiar with Dacco converters, but a local shop built my tranny and that's all they carry performance wise. My RPM's through the traps are about 5000rpm in 3rd gear. ;)

From my experience if a car gets stuck at one MPH run after run despite changes the valve gear is at fault.

ckaram, I just got what you were saying about the engine making noise above 5000rpm. graemlins/clonk.gif

Anyway I decided to pull a valve cover. I'm not exactly versed in the world of valve train geometry, but shouldn't my rockers be in different positions? My rockers have a machined surface on top, and using a straight edge I found that many of them are in the same position. The ones that aren't are only like .040" different from the ones that are.

OH!!! I just remembered that the heads that are on my engine weren't originally going to be on my engine. The guy that built my engine said that my heads (fully assembled w/springs and all) were going to go on a 12.5:1 big solid cammed 302! I think I might have the wrong springs? Does anyone know? Thanx again.

Yo Toad! I am no expert, but your symptoms are similar to ones that my engine exhibited.

If you have the part number of your cam, validate the RPM range for power with Isky. If your intake is matched to this range, then I gotta think your valve springs may need replaced (especially if your car falls flat at 5 grand).

When I got the heads for my car, I didn't replace the springs which was a mistake. My car fell flat at 4500 (validated by dyno). New springs and she pulls to 5500.

I can't answer your rocker question. Let's see what the real experts say.
