I'm getting ready to buy some parts to build a 427 motor, and although I've always dreamed of ownign a ZL1, it isn't likely.

Has anyone installed the ZL1 cam in an iron 427, or with the ZL1 heads? I am pretty sure this was the L88 motor, essentially the same as a Zl1, but with an iron block? Any one comment on that>? And if they are the same aside from the iron block, what is the difference in sound, and performance, or is it simply weight?

THanks

I have used them in both street and race cars and have come to the conclusion they don't work in either application. They do idle like nothing you will ever hear on a street motor if that is what you want but they have no bottom end really don't work nearly as well as the more modern shorter duration cams. I always used them in 454s so the problems would be even bigger with a 427. It doesn't matter what head block combo (iron-iron) (alum.-iron) you use but it needs atleast 12to1 compression to have any sort of bottom end power. If you want a factory cam the earlier 535 L-88 cam is far superior and even it can't compare to the modern cams.
